Gaza conflict: Israel and Palestinians agree long-term truce

(BBC) A long-term ceasefire has been agreed between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

The truce, ending seven weeks of fighting that has left more than 2,200 people - mostly Palestinians - dead, was brokered by Egypt and began at 19:00 local time (16:00 GMT).

Hamas said the deal represented a "victory for the resistance".

Israel is to ease its blockade of Gaza to allow in aid and building materials, Israeli officials said.

Indirect talks on more contentious issues, including Israel's call for militant groups in Gaza to disarm, will begin in Cairo within a month.

The US gave the full backing to the deal, with State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki saying: "We strongly support the ceasefire announcement."

And now the rebuilding begins with costs estimated to exceed $6 Billion USD.

And, for my fellow US tax payers, here's where the real fun begins:

So in effect, we give Israel money ($3.1 Billion/year) in foreign military aid; part of which they use to knock it all down. And now we'll be giving money to rebuild it.

Kerry pledged $47 Million humanitarian aid package to Gaza the first week of the conflict. Now $84 Million is owed by the US on the power plant insurance claim (and yes, the damage suffered is covered).

I expect this total will grow over the coming days.

The USA military aid to Israel is mostly spent on buying from USA firms. In essence, more of a subsidy for big weapon companies. Seem to recall that when the USA re-built Iraq there were quite a few USA companies making a decent profit out of it. Wonder if it will be the same here.

Yes indeed, private fortunes will be made while the National Debt rises.

HAMAS is a loosely knit bunch of terrorists.

This 'long term' ceasefire stops as the first rocket is fired. Will not take long.

Once again Israelis will give something for nothing.

Unfortunately there is nothing to talk about with HAMAS and nobody to talk to within this organisation.

Any candidates for a Nobel Peace Prize ligned up? Jen Psaki?

If this ceasefire got her stamp of approval - it cannot be good.

A long-term ceasefire only last until Hamas fires the next rocket.

A ceasefire will last until Israel provokes Hamas in the hope that they will fire a rocket.

A few unwarranted arrests, "easing" the blockade in a deliberately slow way, just generally making life extremely unpleasant for the Gazans.

As always you are so right.

After all, it was Israel who orchestrated and encouraged Hamas to kidnap and kill 3 teenagers.

Hamas would never do anything wrong, as their main priority is the people and not rebuilding of tunnels or re stock of rockets.

Thank you, although your last sentence sounds sarcastic, and if not, is incorrect.

It's recent news....remind us why the 3 teenagers were kidnapped? What was that in retaliation for?

And your point is?

Why not say what you feel about all this money?

I can say it for you. Pity that the $6 Bn you mention will go into rebuilding the tunnels destroyed by these bloody Israelis. And buying more and better rockets by these bloody Gazans.

At least the $3 Bn for Israel you mention we know will go back to US military complex in sales. Otherwise US Gov't would have to subsidize the same complex directly.

In any case, your post is a refreshing distraction of the moan and groan in the World media about huge loss of 'innocent' lives.

One thing is funny though. I watched hundreds of videos of those poor victims of Israeli genocide fighting, demonstrating, dead and alive. None of them looks emaciated, hungry, trying to build something - all ready to fight!

Yes, children and their mums included!

If they put their readiness to fight into building a better life - they would surely have it by now. Just like Israelis have. And US taxpayers would save their $6 Bn.

Remember: " We love death as Israelis love life"! A motto like this goes a lo-o-ong way.

It WAS sarcastic. The whole post was sarcastic. Congrats on figuring that out.

Well, I was primarily venting frustration at what I think is an unfortunate waste of US tax payer money, but it was interesting to see where you went with it.
