Chiang Rai rocked by over 1,200 aftershocks after the May 5 quake

CHIANG RAI: -- Residents in three districts of Chiang Rai are still living in fear as aftershocks continue to rock their houses with many now have adapted their daily lives to stay with the natural disaster.

Latest aftershock measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale hit Phan district at 4.41 a.m. Wednesday.

The epicentre of the shock was located three kilometres deep underground in Phan district.

The Seismology Office of the Thai Meteorology Department said the aftershock was felt by people in the area but there was no report of damages to properties and injuries.

It went on saying that since August 24 to August 27, six aftershocks measuring from 2.1 to 4.8 on the Richter scale had rocked Mae Suay, Mae Lao, and Phan districts.

In total, it said that since the deadly 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Mae Lao district on May 5 until August 25, it has recorded 23 aftershocks of 5.0-5.9 magnitudes, 94 aftershocks of 4.0-4.9 magnitudes, 233 aftershocks of 3.0-3.9 magnitudes, and 882 aftershocks of 3.0 magnitude and lower.

The multiple aftershocks have now forced residents in these three districts to take their own precautions.
Some have bolted their TVs, cabinets, furniture, cupboards to reinforced ground, while some tied them to firm poles and walls.

Meanwhile convenient stores also now move fragile merchandises from overhead shelves to the ground as well as other fragile objects to lower shelves.

What was the size of the earthquake that has just happened

An aftershock is like an echo - making it related to the main shock. Many of those "aftershocks" mentioned in the OP are actually new earthquakes that may have occurred AFTER the May earthquake. The only relation to the main quake is that the stress was relieved. Like one a group of dudes - then one dude says he's gotta piss, the next dudes suddenly get the urge to piss. But pisser Nbr. 1is unique from pisser nbr. 2 or 3. To be honest, I would rather have more frequent but lower intensity quakes and have a very long quake-less period. That is very much like keeping the fart in and when you can't hold it anymore - end up with an ear-shattering fart. Apologies for the analogy. ha ha...

It is, quite simply, impossible to add further to your post. Thank you for making things clear giggle.gif

I was there in July when the 4.3 at 8 30 at nigh,t had the whole house shhok

Was my First Thai earthquake

Will be many more

The way it is going on

Plus

There are more earthquake all over the world

So something is happening to cause all this

Has anyone ant Thoughts On This??

Lizard2010 - you would have to make an extensive survey to say conclusively that "there are more earthquakes NOW than in the past". It is very possible that that impression you have is because news travels soooo much faster now - with the Internet, instant messaging, instagram etc. I would not loose any sleep over a 2012 (as in that disaster movie) scenario. Welcome to planet Earth.

I agree with this post and I wrote a very similar reply, even referencing the same movie, but on second thought binned it. If it came from me, someone would no doubt take exception.

I think I must enter my opinion on this as well. I concur with the sense of the comments made by toybits and vf. We actually only FELT the March 2011 and May 2014 quakes (plus a couple of the May aftershocks. HEARD about the rest.

My father-in-law tells me there used to be a lot of them when he was younger but he can't tell me when. In his case, it could be white lightning too.

Rotweiler, actually what your father-in-law said makes a lot of sense. If I were a forensic geologist (if there were ever was one), I would interpret that long period without quakes as the buildup period. This build up period was a kink in the smooth movement of sliding plates at a fault line. Then that kink was broken and all of a sudden, you have quakes again... No unexpected really.

A friend is building a house in Chiang Rai.

Hope it's earthquake proof!

Probably not...
