I will be overseas for a few weeks and I do not think I can get my retirment extension renewed before I leave. I am due to arrive back about 4 days before my current extension expires.

How long will I be stamped in for when I return to Thailand?

You will get 4 days if that is how much that is left on your extension. The immigration officer may ask if that is all you want and if you say OK he will stamp you in for 30 days.

But those 4 days should be enough to get your extension done.

Leaving date is not yet fixed. It will be more than 30 days, but maybe less than 45 days. If that is so I will give Jomtien Immigration a try. If they are helpful - problem solved. If not I just wanted to know where I will stand.

Yes exactly: if you get stamped in on a visa waiver, your retirement extension will be superseded, and you will be starting from a visa waiver entry. You cannot get an annual extension directly from a visa waiver entry.

Best to make sure he just stamps you in for the four days, as the retirement extension specifies, otherwise you may be in for a big hassle!

If I were in the OP's shoes I would be sorely tempted to err on the side of caution for my peace of mind and obtain a single-entry 90-day non-O visa while I was overseas.

45 days is doable if u can show them your ticket out,

There are no queues in Chiang Rai. At this stage they are saying that for an extension of stay for retirement you have to attend their main office at Mae Sai. However you have to attend the office where you live. If you live in the area covered by Chiang Mai then you have to attend there.

You cannot go to a different office from the one where you live. You must use the one where you live.

That is why most offices ask for proof of residence when you apply for extensions.

The denied extension would be for the 7 day extension application not the retirement extension. So he can still apply for the retirement extension. Nothing has changed from what they have been doing for years.
