Hi

We live outside Surat. No ADSL line to our house but we do have a phone line.

We can get internet on phones and IPad, with True and AIS.

Now Mrs has been chatting with an Aunty about satellite internet... So guys came around to chat with my Mrs today. They allegedly install systems for CAT, as CAT don't do it themselves !!

Because we are more than a few kms from the nearest tower aerial, the quote is 7000 for equipment and 1000 for labour. Then 1800 per router and the monthly subscription (which we would pay through the guy installing it) of between 700-1700 a month.

Sounds suspect to me... We will go and chat with CAT on Monday but does anyone use this kind of setup and what is the feedback??

Thanks

Are you sure there is no DSL? If you have a phone line usually TOT will give you some DSL service, crappy as it may be if you're miles away from the CO. I had an truly awful connection for years until they installed a DSLAM a 100m from my house, but it was something.

IMHO a crappy DSL connection will be an awful lot better, and certainly cheaper than an equally crappy sat service

It's worth pushing them a little

If 3G is better, then how do I set up a wifi system to use multiple devices.

Like I say, we have 3G on an IPad with True and on my phone with AIS...

Is there an easy way to use one SIM card through a series of boosters and create a wifi environment ?

3G is better than satellite internet.

Indeed it is, but our OP is actually talking about one of the WiMax like solutions, point to point microwave link, works pretty well.

Plus, CAT packages on Hinet, are they properly unlimited or same as a 3G service that throttles speeds after a certain limit?

Our TOT version was truly unlimited (I never hit any cap).

Get a 3G router and plug an aircard into it.

A wi net or wifi from AIS or the like is better then aircard if that is what it is. Be careful and make sure you know what your getting most sales people will slam anything in if they know it won't even work or not.

I have said router for my dtac 3G aircard - provides 4 ports and wifi - auto starts when someone wants internet and disconnects after 5 min of no activity but the local network is always up. 1400b most everywhere mine happens to be a dlink brand.

Make sure it is wi net or what ever they are installing. Sat internet not only costs it never worked well from ToT and the 512k package was more like 128k 70% of the time. I had no choice for years - dumped it the vary minute I could. We were dancing in the street when we saw the dtac tower going up. Waiting for AIS winet from the tower behind the house it is said to be coming for the last 18 months or so, true siad they would have something but never came ether. 3g dtac is getting me by for now and more then 1000 times better then tot ever did and cheaper too.

So a quick trip to the main CAT office proved my suspicions correct.

The guys that talked to my wife have nothing to do with CAT and the Hinet option is not available where we stay anyway :)

On a plus note, they are going to install fibre optic free of charge next month and we should have 20Mbps/3Mbps package up and running. I know that will probably be just in Thailand and slower connection to Europe and US but as long as I can watch the F1, then I'm a happy chappy.. 1500 baht a month :)
