Visa puzzle - Can you help?

Featured Replies

Hi

We're a married young couple in their 30s looking to put down roots in South East Asia. With research.. living long term in Thailand (Koh Samui) has come out tops for many practical and personal reasons. We intend to have children imminently.

So now to visas...

my husband will be working out of Thailand on a rotational schedule out of Thailand 14 days out 14 days in ie taking his 2 weeks holiday in Thailand but residing elsewhere (he'll be in Thailand for less than 90 days over 6 months). From my research it looks like he shouldn't have any problem legally using the tourist visa - aside from occasional pull aside from immigration to prove he has a return ticket which he will be able to do and a passport that fills up very quickly!...but luckily he has two. My husband will carry on doing this option indefinitely

I intend to learn Thai so will apply for a ED multi entry visa ...and will use this visa (renewing yearly for as long as possible). Then if get to the '5 year' 'maximum time' will look at elite visa option (if they are still around by then). Then retirement visa when I'm old enough!

Any problems with the visa ideas above?? Any help/ suggestions would be appreciated

Also if anyone can advise what would happen with our future potential children. Is it simple to arrange visa for them long term. Is there any implication for when they get to 14 yrs etc

Thanks appreciate any help to ensure we're making sensible decisions about living in Thailand long term as a future family

With a 2 by 2 week schedule he should be able to do that on 30 day visa exempt entries (they are not tourist visas).

Where do plan on getting a multiple entry ED visa that gives 90 day entries for a year. Or do you mean getting an extension of stay at immigration. I not sure up will be able do 5 years on an ED extensions of stay (not a visa). It would depend upon what you are going to study and whether the school can offer a course of study the qualifies for the extensions.

If a attending a language school you will only be able to get 90 day extensions and will have to go out every year for a new ED visa after 1 year from the date of entry with one (new rules).

At this time children under the age 15 do non pay overstay fines. But they still need to get visas or extension of stay.

If you are getting ED extension your children can get extensions as your dependent.
