Common Core Math

Featured Replies

I was visiting a school a year ago and watched a Thai math teacher explain, in English, how to solve a basic problem. It was so absurd I had to cover my mouth with my hand to keep the groan in.

Recently I saw a video about the hotly debated Common Core curriculum in America, mandated by the Obama administration.

And guess what, it is, as far as I can see, the exact same method used in that Thai government classroom.

What gives?

Common core is the devil.

Let me rephrase:

Has anyone direct knowledge of this curriculum being used in Thailand?

For how long? Before CC in the States, or since then?

... mandated by the Obama administration.

Obviously you have some agenda to promote. Curriculum is not adopted by the president or the federal government in the US. Many states may have chosen to adopt this curriculum, but not all have, so it can hardly be described as being mandated by anyone.

... as far as I can see, the exact same method used in that Thai government classroom.

You could hardly deduce a mandated teaching method, let alone an entire curriculum, by watching someone explain how to solve some problems.

And curriculum normally sets out content, skills and assessment. That's not instructional methodology. And again, hardly something you could deduce from watching problem solving technique being taught by one teacher.

Love to know what supposed credentials you have in mathematics education or curriculum. The curriculum may be hotly debated, but hopefully the debate is conducted by people better informed than you.

No agenda. Try this:

Again, the question is:

Has anyone direct knowledge of this (Common Core) curriculum being used in Thailand?

For how long? Before CC in the States, or since then?

Common Core is used by Buds School in Chalong, Phuket

.

Thank you.

Their website states their Common Core Curriculum is "internationally top rated."

I've recently found information that indicates it is being used in several countries. I have never seen any reports back in the States that reveals other countries are using it, or that it is an "international standard."
