Scottish independence: Yes camp hails 'momentum'

Reading today's story about the better togethers "initiative" to devolve more powers in case of a NO vote -- it turns out that there's no new powers on offer, just a timetable for the same ones that are already agreed. Trouble is that apparently HMRC has already vetoed anything actually happening before 2016.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-29105565

What actually happened was that George Osbourne genuinely announced that NEW powers were to be announced THIS WEEK -

And got his balls heavily booted when it was pointed out that it's ILLEGAL to make such announcements during electoral PURDAH -

He seems to have forgotten that almost 500,000 Scots have voted already, with 800,000 plus postal votes due to be sent in total.

Idiot.

Sterling plunges nearly 1% on currency markets overnight I do hope those pushing for a YES vote will not complain when we get a lot less than before.

A very good point, if the £ does get into trouble it will affect everyone in the UK, pensions, savings, mortgages etc, no area will be excluded, as the markets do not like uncertainty, this of course applies to the immediate future. in the longer term according to a French economist that I read the other day, the £ will rebound, while he refused to speculate on the Scottish currency, for the simply reason, he like the rest of us does not know if Scotland will have a currency of it's own or will follow the £, Euro or the Baht.

The strength of the Scottish (or any other country's) economy if not expressed as the value of it's currency versus others, or gold. It is really the GDP that forms probably the best baseline, and that can be measured in what you want -- any currency or commodity. The currency of the country will follow the GDP - so if Scotland goes get to use the pound, and thrives after independence then sterling will benefit from the situation.

Yes their last minute panic throw of the dice ended up as a custard pie event.

I'm loving their comedy sideshow....

Hmm. Well, if the yes vote gets it, I s'pose I'll become a dual national and should apply for a Scottish passport. The service might prove better. But then, with a sudden fall-off in British passport holder numbers, the current service might suddenly improve.

If that's the case - is it serious enough for him and others to be charged with tampering with the election/referendum ?

Who's going to pursue this if the vote goes NO ? ;)

I sincerely hope it is a yes vote, being English if I was in Scotland right now I would be pushing for the yes camp.

Scotland is heading for a whole world of trouble,The idiot Salmonman promises many things with those bulging eye sockets, but the truth is Scotland will be dancing to England's merry tune within a couple of years, 5 million population against a 55 million population and the powers that be in Westminster will be after blood

All the English banks have to do is starve Scotland of currency , the £ ,and how any country can let 16 to 18 year olds vote on something they do not have a clue about

The problem is that the financial centre of London has overtaken the economy. We used to manufacture - and financial services were a lovely bonus - now the UK is in thrall to the City of London - and all the so-called profits from the tax take over the last 30 years were wiped out and plenty more by having to bail the banks out.

Forget about the independence debate - do any of we Brits actually believe that the government has learnt is lesson?

Of course they haven't - they are still in thrall to the City of London.

For once I agree with you, now tell us, who were the Prime Ministers during 13 yrs of this period, and who were the Chancellors of the Exchequer. Do the names Tony Lier Blair, Gordon Bigot Brown and Alister Darling ring a bell, where do they come from?. Yet in a separated Scotland the Nationalist will produce more competent leaders. Bullshit,

They have more of a clue than a lot of the people posting on this topic.

Hilariously - one guy even suggested that they were pro-Yes.

The SNP has provided absolutely nothing to the big questions, only for the shield bashing gun-ho voters that think they have a different life from the other union members which is total rolox.

Mr and Mrs English, Scottish or Welsh are treated exactly the same in every aspect of UK life, thats it.

The Barnett Formula provided more per head for the Scottish by way of receipts of tax revenue.

Anyway it is a done deal now,the YES vote have it.

All the headlines ,a waste of time, the union was only in name only,if the English were given the option to get rid of Scotland,Northern Ireland and Wales at one go they would have jumped at it I'm sure

The politicians ,newspaper editors even royalty want to pipe down, the average English guy in the street could not give two hoots.

Looking at twitter and the two liners ,most of the English are paranoid at wanting the break up

No it doesn't.

Scot's were paid out £1200 per year "extra"

After paying £1700 a year more in.

So we are subsidizing the rest of the UK.

You sound like an Englishman...and one with very little knowledge of the Union, it's history or Scotland.

It's his level of ignorance that brings out the worst in everyone - he seems to forget that the UK electorate voted in Blair -

Even if you had removed the Scottish electorate from all three election victories by Blair - he would still have won.

He also chooses to ignore the fact that Blair represented an English constituency.

even if the Scots don't go independent there will have to be major reforms. One of the most important should IMO be the formation of an English assembly. That will at least give the nod to all countries in the Union being equal.....at present the accepted philosophy is that England doesn't need an assembly as it already has control of the Union parliament.
