Is Thailand really losing Russian arrivals?

If only it were 5.5%. TAT would be very pleased with that fictitious number. I have not seen a Russian for weeks now. A group that was very plentiful just a few months ago, has diminished dramatically. Of course, it is summer there now. And with the embargoes it is tough for them to travel right now. They can thank Putin for that. Their glorious leader has made life a bit of a challenge.

I hope Russian will choose another place , when you see how they are treated in this forum by some sexpat thinking they are better than anyone else ...and who define themselves as more Thai than Thais , I would rather be friend with a Russian than a narrow minded arrogant Brit or yank who think he is someone in here but in fact is not better than anyone else. Pathetic .... bah.gifbah.gif

From personal experience I find them arrogant, rude and abusive- maybe I'm wrong in generalising and basing it on the ones I've met in Thailand....But then when you have a leader that thinks it's ok to invade another country without international support, shoot down a passenger jet, and rides with not shirt on horse back....you really have to wonder what hope these people have...

just for the record, my mate is happily married to a Russian woman. hes ill with cancer now so i ive told him he can stop at my pattaya beach condo and enjoy his time rather than stay in the UK council estate dump hes stuck in now. his wife flatly refused to go to thailand as (in her words) she did not want to be surrounded by rude, pig ignorant, arrogant people from her own country and she would rather stay amongst the benefit claiming lowlifes on the estate than mix with them.

her rather attractive 26 year old daughter also flatly refused to go there as she was fearful for her safety once they found out she was unmarried and on her own.

.......their words, not mine, i thought she would enjoy spending time amongst her own, speaking her own language etc.

wow ! and that's from the 'horses mouth' . Nice you do that for your mate- I hope he recovers.

As for the 26yr old daughter I don't mind taking her to Thailand...she'd be safe I promise !

I hear your opinion, but I am curious if you actually live in a place where the majority of people you are surrounded with everyday have been Russian tourists for YEARS. Because if not, it's hard to see how such a person could have an INFORMED opinion about Russian tourist behavior (as a generality) in Thailand.

well I can reply to you , I have been to Russia over 23 times in the last decade , 21 years living in Thailand and been surrounded by many nationalities , the behavior of Russian tourists is not worse than any other nationalities ... judging people or a country only on the fact that you live in pattaya is disgraceful .. dont think you are better than anyone you are only a guest in Thailand like the rest of all the farang here

I'm not anti Russian, I just prefer people who arn't loud, rude, racist, narrow minded and ignorant.

I too have nothing at all against Russians. I think everyone should own one.

Hm, until you mentioned shooting down a passenger jet I thought you were talking about Bush going into Iraq! Which is why the shrub was such a disaster, now the US has no moral high ground on which to stand, not a category even a cynic like myself would have put the US in prior.

Russians, are only good for 7/11 or family mart,,,They sit on the beach,do not use the deck chairs,or buy food from the traders,They go over to 7/11 and bring back,,,Night time they buy cheap thai whiskey, and sit in there,as cheap as they can get rooms..The brits are leaving in numbers,,Thailand,,has lost the plot,,yes we are not as many as ..ie,, indians chinese russians,,Who now make the tourist numbers up.But we do squander a great deal of money ,,ie bars beach, and women..I also think we spend more in 7/11 and family mart, than them,,,Are hygene is far higher,,

The arrogance of Russians, makes Yanks look like Canadians. I live amongst them and it's not slagging if true.

It never seases to amaze me the way all those Bangkok sexpats constantly slag Pattaya without even setting foot in the place. If Bangkok had the same amount of Russians as Pattaya I'm sure we'd hear a different tune.

Have travelled all over the world for the last 40 years and yes i must agree the russian people i have encountered were terrible however they

come second in the obnoxtious stakes to jews from Israel. They really do think they own the world ! On my travels in Thailand i have encountered

Jewish holidaymakers and i must say they were horrible.

I lived in Thailand for 8 years and moved back to the USA 8 months ago. I can tell you from my point of view I always felt like a necessary evil accepted by the Thai government, never a “guest”.

The Thai’s here in the US are totally accepted they have businesses, own land or whatever they want, if they are successful we are happy for them. I can’t speak for someone else but in my opinion I believe the Thai’s living here in the US don’t feel like “guests” they feel established and secure in their new home.

I hate to generalize but with that said, the Russians that I have come in contact with have been arrogant, rude and treat the Thais horribly. They leave their garbage around like the entire country is just one giant garbage receptacle. I have seen them on scuba diving excursions drinking before diving, which is absolutely prohibited for safety reasons, then come unclued when they weren't allowed to dive. No big loss.

The ruble/baht exchange rate has no bearing on arrivals.

The immigration crackdowners would have us believe that all of them come here to work illegally anyway.

So they are spending baht not rubles.

"So they are spending baht not rubles."

Hmmm. Now let's see... WHAT do you suppose a Russian must sell in order to buy Thai baht that's he's going to spend?? OK, now when a LOT of people suddenly want to SELL one thing, in order to buy something else, WHAT do you suppose happens to the price of the thing being SOLD? Esp. vs the thing they're all wanting to BUY?

But you're sort of right in saying it the way you actually said it. "Has no bearing" as in, doesn't actually cause the drop in the number of arrivals. But the two things are obviously related. Something is causing them both... Other posters addressing those causes in this thread.

I went to the snake show near Pattaya in 2010 it was full of Russian family's. Only non Russians were me and my friend and a few Thais. Another time I was on one of the Islands sitting in the back of a baht-bus my friend could not find a light and a Russian guy leaned over and lite his cigarette for him. I had a talk with him with his wife as translator where they lived in Russian it was -40 so no wonder they come to Thailand. I think I read somewhere once before Russians are loud because that is their culture, where they live they have to fight for their share of things which is why they push their way to the front of queues. Putin is a good example of their culture when you see him ridding horses bear chested. Most Thais Ive talked to don't like Russians because they say they are mean with their money and they buy cheap beer and drink it outside of 7/11.

Ive had zero trouble from Russians however I have had plenty of trouble in the past from fellow English people in England. I think their are trouble makers from every nationality not just the occasional Russian. The Chinese appear to be doing quite well at the moment plenty of youtube vids of badly behaved Chinese tourists.

Who runs the boiler rooms in Thailand? Take a guess Who operates illegal tour companies? That alone is costing Thai's jobs Getting into scams they had control over for years. I won't even get into all the Russians hookers posting online for dates or escorts services. Noticed being PC I didn't mention name of site either we all know the site. Also noticed a lot of high end condo's up for rent so good prices will start coming down. also noticed lately a bunch of bars for sale guess moving operations else where, Burma perhaps? Not bashing stating facts.Heck I know several Russians nice people but even they tell me don't get involved in business with them. So TAT want to increase tourism then get rid of the two price system also on attraction if free for Thai's free for all. That way people come here and truly feel welcome. The country becomes more inviting. And stop Quoting these useless rags like Huffington Post no one believes the thrash try write. Get more truth from the SUN yes Micheal Jackson is alive and well working as reporter for Aljezzar News.

Let's hope so!

Absolutely agreed. Definately some of the pushiest, rudest and obnoxious people I have encountered in a long time.

From what I have personally heard, I am fairly sure that the local Thais will be happy to see the back of them also.

All the confusing immigration rule changes and bad publicity regarding scams and attacks are taking its toll regardless of announcement by TAT which is a publicity stunt.

The massive increase in beer prices due to tax rises haven't helped either. The majority of tourists enjoy a few pints when they are on holiday and bar prices are nearly as high as Europe. Restaurant meals for cuisines other than Thai have also risen (and a drink in a restaurant is even more expensive than in a bar).

Quite simply tourists want safety, fun and value for money and in many respects Thailand no longer offers this.

There are certainly pleasant and less pleasant people of many nationalities around. We all know our own countrymen. There are pedantic Germans, superior Americans, colonial British, drunk Aussies, yelling Chinese, smelly Koreans, ever arguing Irish etc.

We tend to notice the less pleasant examples much more than the really nice folks, who don't stand out.

There are certainly many Russians around that are not trying to take over the place and thus fit right in. We like to stereotype.

Anyway, this thread is about numbers going down. I for one feel they do.

At the same time I think numbers are going down generally. Not sure why. I don't believe that political situation has much to do with it. People back home don't really hear much of Thailand.
