Indonesian 6.2 magnitude quake has no impact on Thai coasts

BANGKOK: -- The Seismology Bureau said the 6.2-magnitude earthquake which struck off the central Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Wednesday has no impact on Thailand.

Its assurance came as the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck in the sea 122 kilometres (75 miles) southeast of the town of Modayag at 0246 GMT at a depth of 20 kilometres.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said that the tremor was felt in the northern part of Sulawesi island.

It said there were no reports yet of damage or casualties so far, but people reported feeling the quake, and there is no threat of a tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
