BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry has quarantined a 52-year-old Dutch national, who had high fever after returning from a business trip to Ebola-hit Nigeria, said Dr Sophon Mekthon, director general of the Disease Control Department.

The man, who returned to Thailand on Wednesday, visited a private hospital for treatment and was immediately transferred to Siriraj Hospital, which is set to take care of suspected Ebola patients.

Results of his blood tests are expected today, while 21 people who had close contact with the patient are also under close watch.

At this time, the virus can only be spread by contact of bodily fluids.

The virus itself is quite fragile when exposed to atmosphere and simple soap and water can kill it - good hygiene drastically reduces chances of exposure. As mentioned above, people who are contracting the virus are often relatives who are caring for sick family members.

Nigeria has only declared 19 cases of Ebola. Seven deaths.

Lagos now has 16 contacts under surveillance. A total of 350 contacts who were previously on surveillance have been discharged having completed 21 days of observation.

Ebola has not mutated to be spread air-borne, and it is highly unlikely. Pathogens very rarely change and mutate to find new ways of transmission.

And my 'trust' in African (or any other...) Government declaring true and correct figures is pretty non-existent. And even if they tried hard to report correct figures, the African culture of families caring for their sick makes that effort pretty much impossible to achieve...

A medical expert from the Department of Medical Services (DMS), Dr Nareumol Sawanpanyalert and Deputy Director of Department of Disease Control (DDC) Dr Opart Kamkawinpong, this morning informed the press that the patient's blood test returned negative for Ebola, and his temperature has now lowered to stabilising at 37 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the close observation of 21 patients suspected of being infected with Ebola continued and they would undergo another blood test on Monday 15.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), in the meantime, said that the Ebola virus would continue to spread for another 6-9 months, and a number of countries are sending funds and othef assistance to the three Ebola-plagued countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. (MCOT online news)

Mandatory vaccinations? They need to develop a vaccine first.

Only 2000+ have died so far, but the issue is, it is out of control. More and more people are becoming infected and more and more people are dying.

And when people can go through health check points without being picked up, that will mean that it will be very difficult to stop the spread into more and more countries.

While I understand you to be correct based on the information released by the WHO and CDC in Atlanta I would be a little more cautious.

If it is so difficult to catch, why have so many US, European, and African doctors and nurses contracted the Ebola virus. They are either

incredibly stupid/reckless or possibly the transmission capability of the virus is much, much higher than the public is led to believe to help

prevent panic by the public. I am not by any means a conspiracy nut. I am just surprised how many highly trained/ educated personal in the

medical field could possibly become infected by Ebola. A deadly but supposedly difficult virus to spread.

I would still not want to be the next person, on its next flight, to use the seat he has been sweating-in.

Or to follow him into the toilet on-board, touching the door-handles & taps & toilet-flush, which an infected person just touched with perspiring hands.

Or take his meal-tray, which he's been touching while eating from it, to pass to the flight-attendant.

Or be sat next to him on a long-haul flight, as he climbs across me to get in/out of his seat & go to the bathroom.

Or share a taxi with him, to the same hotel.

I once had to deal with a bus-load of tourists, who arrived in my hotel with several cases of gastro-enteritis, another virus spread by close contact, we ended-up with four visiting the local hospital & over half catching it !

Good to see that this was another false-alarm, these cases provide live-practice for the Thai authorities.

Meanwhile Cuba is sending 165 health workers to West Africa for six months ... good for them !
