EBOLA OUTBREAK
Dutch national quarantined for suspected Ebola

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry has quarantined a 52-year-old Dutch national, who had high fever after returning from a business trip to Ebola-hit Nigeria, said Dr Sophon Mekthon, director general of the Disease Control Department.

The man, who returned to Thailand on Wednesday, visited a private hospital for treatment and was immediately transferred to Siriraj Hospital, which is set to take care of suspected Ebola patients.

Results of his blood tests are expected today, while 21 people who had close contact with the patient are also under close watch.

Its going to be difficult to contain, what about all the other passengers on the flight.Lets hope this guys tests negative.

-------------------

For your information ..... Ebola is not spread like flu by inhalation it is spread by contact with bodily fluids from an infested person.

That means an infected person generally has to touch you at the very least to infect you.

You can not get infected from sitting in the same plane as the infected person, you need to contact him or her by touching them. directly.

The reason it spreads so fast in those countries in Africa where it is spreading is because relatives have a custom of washing a sick or dead person's body to "clean" them, and that's how Ebola is usually spread.

Ebola cases so far are being spread by direct contact .... it doesn't spread through the air by breathing in the virus like the flu or a cold does.

I've heard that Ebola has mutated and can be spread by breathing now. Are you a doctor? Are you sure?

There has been nothing reported that it is airborne (except when someone directly sneezes or coughs on you). If it was, it would be definitely in the news.

Ask yourself the same question - are you a Doctor, you are going on heresy yourself.

At this time, the virus can only be spread by contact of bodily fluids.

The virus itself is quite fragile when exposed to atmosphere and simple soap and water can kill it - good hygiene drastically reduces chances of exposure. As mentioned above, people who are contracting the virus are often relatives who are caring for sick family members.

Ebola has not mutated to be spread air-borne, and it is highly unlikely. Pathogens very rarely change and mutate to find new ways of transmission.

.....who.........in his right mind...will venture into any of those high-risk areas......

Unless the guy specifically works relating to Ebola the risk sounds slight.

Nigeria has only declared 19 cases of Ebola. Seven deaths.

Lagos now has 16 contacts under surveillance. A total of 350 contacts who were previously on surveillance have been discharged having completed 21 days of observation.

And my 'trust' in African (or any other...) Government declaring true and correct figures is pretty non-existent. And even if they tried hard to report correct figures, the African culture of families caring for their sick makes that effort pretty much impossible to achieve...

And yet, this is described as (literally) the deadliest outbreak of Ebola in history.

True, but looking at all the photos of men in spacesuits and respirators does little to reassure me that an Ebola infected person coughing and sneezing in the seat next to me is not a problem.

Dutch man is free of Ebola virus
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Sept 12 -- Thai physicians said today that a Netherlands national who was under examination to determine whether or not he was infected with the deadly Ebola virus, is now in the clear, as tests showed he only has the flu.

The 52-year old Dutch businessman had returned from a business trip in Nigeria on Wednesday.

While passing through the thermal scanner at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, he did not show signs of having a fever.

Later that night, he found himself with a high fever of 39.8 degrees Celsius and was admitted into a hospital, after questions proved that he was required to test for an Ebola infection.

A medical expert from the Department of Medical Services (DMS), Dr Nareumol Sawanpanyalert and Deputy Director of Department of Disease Control (DDC) Dr Opart Kamkawinpong, this morning informed the press that the patient's blood test returned negative for Ebola, and his temperature has now lowered to stabilising at 37 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the close observation of 21 patients suspected of being infected with Ebola continued and they would undergo another blood test on Monday 15.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), in the meantime, said that the Ebola virus would continue to spread for another 6-9 months, and a number of countries are sending funds and othef assistance to the three Ebola-plagued countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. (MCOT online news)

getting stupid now ..how ever many people think this is going to be the next pandemic it is no where near (even tho 2200 people have died it is not a high % from 15million) ..its all media hype and propaganda ....the time to be concerned is when they start to MANDATORY vaccinate people ....that is the moment to get the hell out of here without taking the vaccine as the moment you take the vaccine you too will be part of the problem...dont believe me then do some research (start with Spanish flu and work forward)

He comes back through airport of Wednesday.

Gets sick, goes to hospital on Wednesday. They test him Wednesday/Thursday and get the answers Friday morning.

06:41 the story hits the Nation and by Friday morning there is a statement.

Very fast indeed.

Mandatory vaccinations? They need to develop a vaccine first.

Only 2000+ have died so far, but the issue is, it is out of control. More and more people are becoming infected and more and more people are dying.

And when people can go through health check points without being picked up, that will mean that it will be very difficult to stop the spread into more and more countries.

As far as the research on vaccinations and Spanish Flu ... well, let's just say, make sure you've got your tin foil hat handy.

Yep, They said something like that back when it was in one country and only a couple of hundred infected. Why don't you say that to the now more than 4,000 who are infected. Should have stopped flights to those countries weeks ago. Screw the human rights. Must millions risk their lives.

While I understand you to be correct based on the information released by the WHO and CDC in Atlanta I would be a little more cautious.

If it is so difficult to catch, why have so many US, European, and African doctors and nurses contracted the Ebola virus. They are either

incredibly stupid/reckless or possibly the transmission capability of the virus is much, much higher than the public is led to believe to help

prevent panic by the public. I am not by any means a conspiracy nut. I am just surprised how many highly trained/ educated personal in the

medical field could possibly become infected by Ebola. A deadly but supposedly difficult virus to spread.

I would still not want to be the next person, on its next flight, to use the seat he has been sweating-in.

Or to follow him into the toilet on-board, touching the door-handles & taps & toilet-flush, which an infected person just touched with perspiring hands.

Or take his meal-tray, which he's been touching while eating from it, to pass to the flight-attendant.

Or be sat next to him on a long-haul flight, as he climbs across me to get in/out of his seat & go to the bathroom.

Or share a taxi with him, to the same hotel. wink.png

I once had to deal with a bus-load of tourists, who arrived in my hotel with several cases of gastro-enteritis, another virus spread by close contact, we ended-up with four visiting the local hospital & over half catching it ! bah.gif.pagespeed.ce.-cCHYEZ1Lo.gifxsick.gif.pagespeed.ic.tVTSNn-2vr.png

Good to see that this was another false-alarm, these cases provide live-practice for the Thai authorities.

Meanwhile Cuba is sending 165 health workers to West Africa for six months ... good for them ! thumbsup.gif
