These international " overpriced " restaurants you see in these shopping malls are busy with the " non adventurous " type of farang. The type of farang that would go to Starbucks and pay over 100 baht for a coffee ( " ridiculous " may i add..) These types will also try to convince the world that Thai food is no good and should therefore never eat food from a market! ( my 20 baht penang curry from my local market i would choose any day to hideous places such as " sizzlers " and other rubbish found in these malls ) also these types of farang that live in Thailand then want to " tell the world " how expensive Thailand is.

Much of Thailand is third world it's ridiculously cheap ( and so is Bangkok !! ) So can you really live in Thailand on 6000 baht a month " All In " ??? You bet you can!

Welcome to the real Thailand .....welcome to my world viewers !!

I don't see anything "jaidee" about this post. You seem very judgmental about those who live different lifestyle than yourself.

Curious why you sign off your post with "farang jaidee" ? Is that your former name on the board?

I think you're becoming hard of vision, sir. Those international restaurants in malls in the likes of Bangkok are filled with 90 to 100% thai. And in Starbucks id say 99% thai patrons. The Thais love it.

The Starbucks in such places as the hotel Landmark will be filled with farang because it's a TOURIST hotel so what do you expect, although there are Thais In there who just finished working out at fitness first platinum. Go to any star bucks in khon kaen and it will be pure thai, paying full whack without a care.

And how exactly are these international restaurants 'overpriced', compared with your street vendor? Surely things are all relative and is not the same food nor service?

Your street food is cheap because of the low costs to operate. Vendor: Small bribe to the police to setup on the road, cheapest existing ingredients, cheapest cutlery, no running water. Dirty, outside in the pollution and dust.

Compared with huge fitout cost, rents to the mall, aircon bill, water bill, electric bill, wifi bill, staff costs, uniforms, high quality imported ingredients, health and safety certificates, cleaning of all surfaces regularly, highly skilled chefs, trained and qualified management, ff&e, franchise costs, VAT, income tax, tax on profits... The list goes on

Yet in these places you can still get a platter of very decent sashimi for 300 baht, for example. How in gods name is that at all 'overpriced'..?! Please give me a break.

And as for you, you live in patts, then naturally as it's a TOURIST destination where people are on a 1 or 2 week vacation, these international resto's will be frequented heavily by farang. they will most likely have dabbled in the thai food perhaps even street food, but they won't want to eat that every day, as they are on holiday for goodnes sake, so of course they are going to eat in some decent clean restaurants. As they should, they've worked hard all year to earn this break, and you're calling them 'unadventurous' ? That's a bit harsh.

You say welcome to the real Thailand but You really do not understand Thais or Thailand at all, the Thais do not enjoy living in poverty like you or living without aircon or eating off the streets. every thai that can afford it eats in those air con mall places. They absolutely <removed> love it. And no we're not taking about issan farmers living in the arse end of nowhere. Actually go inside one f these malls (out of patts of Phuket) and see for yourself.. Full of Thais young and old

Id say you're just jealous, because you can't afford it. I can imagine your face pressed up against the glass of Fuji drooling at those farang with a bit of cash ordering those grilled prawns, dragon sushi platters, tempura and exotic sashimi. Or looking in on a streak house with one if those farang you hate, ordering a rack of ribs while knocking back a cool imported beer perhaps from Germany or Belgium, while he nibbles on some calamari while waiting with his sexy young thai purchase. Must have driven you mad

Hello Mr Grindting..It's lovely to hear from you again & regards to your dear lady wife.......

Fabulous reply Mr Grindting i laughed myself at the last paragraph ( it should be noted viewers... ) But actually i don't drink so the cold beers wouldn't do too much for me old chap ( British RAF Voice ) and as for the seafood it would bring me out in a " hideous red itchy rash " ( but i do understand the attraction to this type of place ) I also dislike air con so my time in shopping malls would be very limited.( " bloody freezing " ) but if you really want to lure me in to something special then it would have to be a " delicious Margarita Pizza ( with extra cheese ) Cheese i love having lived in Spain for 20 years but in Thailand it is way too expensive! it's the only thing that would drive me mad from your list above.......

God bless you from a " rainy Pattaya "

hi canarysun

this mr. grindting talks about the high quality of the food in this us amercan companies and therefore i guess he is one of this unedicated us americans wich for example don´t know the fact a fishburger from mcdonalds not even have a piece of fish but only a cemical liquid makes tasting the burger like fish. for people like them this is the highest quality you can get ripped off us style in thailand. all this companies selling trash with prices far over the clouds and with net profits even far higher while paying they staff a miserable exploding salary from about 9000 bath a month and a 60 hour working week. he is one of them what i call they stay here while others, like you and me, live here. we feel very good with the thai food on markets and streets and never had problems with the food there. and we are very happy to live the thai live. i wonder why guys like him stay in thailand when all things from the thais are very bad, make sick and so on. and when he talks about he see thai people eating this trash than he don´t realise why. the only reason is some thais are stupid like them, are victims of atvertisment in radio, tv and so on. and about the coffee from starback. 3th class quality with also a lot of cemicals. and i don´t like to tell him much about the gen manipulting food he get there, or the ceese wich is not real cheese but very cheap artificial one. and he says this is high quality. ok some people liked very much to get ripped of and to live in a dream world hahahaha

Bernd1616 - I can only assume English is not your mother language and you mis-read Grindting's reply. There's a middle ground between 25 baht street food and Steak Houses. If one has the money what's wrong with eating the way you like.

You wouldn't by any chance be Dutch would you?? I hear they're a might tight.

Hello again Viewers! I trust you are all well...???

I do have to admit that i was " taken out to lunch " a week ago to one of those ponsy places in one of the shopping malls. ( i didn't want to go as it's really not my thing at all ! (but i wasn't paying..) It was outrageously expensive packed with Thais and farang with conveyor belts going round loaded with tiny dishes.( " not enough on the plate to even choke a kitten ") I have no idea what the place was called but i think they have them in most shopping malls. It was all very ponsy and completely over the top and underneath the expensive surround offered " bugger all ".30 minutes after leaving this place i went to my local market and " invested in a rather delicious Massaman curry for 30 baht with an extra 5 baht for some rice! far more delicious and realistic thai prices!

God Bless you all viewers!

I would hardly think that a Man of 50 years old, who lives in a 2000 baht a month room ( with free wifi and Sat Tv ) who walks everywhere and eats 20 baht meals would be classed as " a snob " ( it should be noted that even my Kito 300 baht flip flops are currently being resoled for 120 thai baht... ) Yes i may speak like " Hugh Grant " and my voice is very " Radio 2 " but it must be noted that i do not wander about with my " nose pointing northwards " looking like " Quentin Crisp " .......

( i would like to thank all the viewers for there kind support in this rather serious matter )

Being a snob has nothing to do with money. It's to do with your outlook on others. You look down on people who like a nice comfortable living

bernd1616, I'm not going to give you the time of day by replying to your post directly as it was one of the worst responses I've ever read, and completely incorrect. You should go and get yourself checked out if you haven't already (if you can afford it), as you clearly have some kind of brain damage.

I'm flopped out on me bed in the bollocko listening to Genesis as the missus washes me scuds and I have thrice 8K a year lad to p*ss about with....

Well I must admit its not exactly "an image of delight " whilst I am eating my lunch (fresh pineapple ) but I also enjoy Genesis - my favourite Rutherford project was the fabulous song " hold on my heart " it brings me to tears every time I listen to it.Maybe I am one of the last of the "romantics" after all........F.J

Canarysun

I wonder where you are going to head to when Thailand becomes too expensive for you like Spain did? (and it will)

Guess your options are fast running out, suppose you'll be living in some remote jungle and once you have annoyed everyone there (incl the monkeys) then you'll be sleeping on the streets in your home country begging for food.

Sad, very sad. Enjoy your pot noodle and porn tonight, have one for me ;) lol

I can afford to live it up here, have a very nice big benefit cheque from the Aussie govt each month as I can no longer work. I also receive rent from my North Sydney house that will mean I'll never have to work again even if the govt cheques stop.

I could even afford to live back in Aussie but prefer the women in Asia and no I have never had to pay for them.

Pineapple for lunch? You must have the appetite of a canary then.

Where do you get the energy for these daily 15 and 20 kilometre walks? Not from meals like that certainly. And how do you get Thai women to speak to you on these jollies, in the summer heat you must be minging long before you've finished, I am surprised they go anywhere near you. Come to that your soap bill will be heavy (surely you don't use a laundry) both for your body and your clothes, any underwear you have on must be festering. I expect he sweat rots through your limited wardrobe quickly, giving a short life expectancy for your wife-beaters - I am assuming you don't have anything with sleeves.

17 years ago I had a 3,000 baht a month room in Pattaya which was basic but liveable, what you will get for 2,000 a month nowadays in Naklua has to be by Western standards pretty squalid. And you can compare sitting there drinking a 3-in -1 coffee with sitting in Starbucks. On a par with your fictitious day out by train from Naklua to Hua Hin.

But you are happy so carry on.

Hello!

Well actually " i do not wear underwear " ( just for our viewers that just " love all the detail...." ) I shower twice a day and use johnsons baby soap ( 15 baht from the 7 eleven ) I have a full wardrobe of clothes with " more outfits than Mr Benn " and remember that most afternoons i will be swimming in the sea ( no charge for the water viewers...) My room is " cool " for only 2000 baht a month! ( seriously cool......) which i clean twice a day may i add... The internet is fast and 100 TV channels which i don't watch ( including Fox News. ITV Choice etc ) I walk everywhere ( out of choice ) and love the sun " mak mak "

Right now i am off on another stroll to the beach ( 15 minute walk ) where i shall be crashing through the waves like " The Hoff" do you have a wild imagination viewers..?

Yes its possible, ive done it on less infact.

But you need discipline and the ability to spend a lot of time in your condo, instead of getting sucked into pubs clubs and fancy restaurants.

Ofcourse, there are ways to enjoy these perks if you meet Mr right.

So fly half way across the world, just so you can spend your entire day in a non airconed studio in thonburi, only to be let out for 30 baht meals and a visa run.

Not really worth it is it?

Now now samran, please dont be too harsh.

Some call it living the dream, for others its the pull of the hairy magnet.

Whats her name OP and what is she bringing to the table.

Best you hook up with the "phlaya" and land a teachers assistant gig in Cambo.

That kao man gai will get pretty boring by about the third day.

As for pissing it up against the wall, doubt if theres much chance of that, he aint going to be able to afford to supp piss.

It will be Cheers Extra, Red Horse, Archa or Chang on the balcony, great social life that.

I remember eating in Tony Romas place on lower Suk years ago, always used to see the TEFLr types staring in enviously as they waited for a non aircon bus to ferry them back to some scuzzy apt in Sam Rong.

555 that's funny...who would look in envy at anyone eating at Tontine Romas?? Probably a look of <deleted>, living in Bkk and eating that @@@@.....lol

People that post how great their expat lives are tend to be the ones who are homesick most. I feel sorry for them.

Why does he bother you so much? You should feel happy enouh with your Aussie steaks and all those girls you couldn't afford back home. I guess with all that bragging you have been doing in your posts you are really home sick but can't go home because you'd never get laid. I'm surprised you Thai Baht millionaires have time between all your jet setting to keep putting this guy down. What's gonna happen when you can't afford Thai women any more (it will happen)?. It will be a sad day for sure. Well, I already know the answer to that question, both you and Canary will end up in the Philppines when you can't afford Thailand any more both for different reasons.

Apart from its just as (if not more) expensive to live in the Philippines & costs are rising just as fast [emoji17]

Back to the OT, would be great to get an update on the OPs thoughts & plans...
