Police have busted ten people across the Kingdom for allegedly trafficking methamphetamine, seizing almost two kilograms of ‘ice’ in the process.

A 24-year-old Laotian man was arrested yesterday in Stung Treng by the Ministry of Interior’s anti-drug unit for allegedly smuggling a 913-gram package of methamphetamines from Laos to sell in the province, according to major general Khieu Saman, the unit’s head.

“Our undercover police officers followed him for about a week before we could reach him and arrest him this morning,” Saman told the Post, adding that the suspect will be sent to provincial court for questioning on Friday.

In Banteay Meanchey province, a police investigation culminated with the arrest of an alleged drug lord, Uon Sonin, 20, on Wednesday night, after he was found in an abandoned house in the province’s Anhcharnh village with 744 grams of meth.

Nine people were implicated in the case, although Lak Phea, head of the provincial police’s information office, said he was unsure how many of them would be sent to court as the suspects are composed of alleged drug dealers, users, and the couple which owned the abandoned house.

“I do not know how many of them will be sent to the court since some of them are not involved in drug dealing and there is only one originator,” he said.

Fifteen years for killer
Fri, 19 September 2014

Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced a purported drug addict to 15 years in prison yesterday for murdering a 7-year-old boy last year during a burglary and dumping his body in the Mekong River.

Presiding judge Ly Lipmeng also ordered defendant Hum Rom, 26, to pay 10 million riel ($2,500) in compensation to the victim’s family.

“The court sentences him to 15 years on charges of intentional murder with aggravating circumstances,” he said.

Veng Chak, Russey Keo district’s Chroy Changvar commune police chief, said that Rom, a drug user, had broken into the victim’s home last November while his parents were at work. He was stealing the family’s valuables when the young boy tried to stop him.

Rom then beat the boy unconscious and threw his body in the Mekong before fleeing. The body was found floating in the river a day later, and Rom was arrested the day after that.

Rom could not be reached for comment yesterday.
