Environmental threat on Chonburi coast as bunker oil leaks

CHONBURI: -- A bunker oil leakage from the Unithai Shipyard and Engineering Ltd. at Laem Chabang is affecting seashore and coastal waters in this eastern province, and caused students at a nearby school to be sent home for health reasons.

Oil is covering the beach for a distance of more than three kilometres.

According to nearby villagers, an explosion occured at the shipyard early Tuesday morning and afterwards an oil slick appeared on the beach.

Strong odours from the accumating oil affected students at a nearby school, causing students to vomit and to experience dizziness and throat irritation.

The pollution prompted the school authorities to close today as it was feared that the oil spill be harmful to the students.

Oil spill near Laem Chabang not expected to affect tourism

The interim Director of the Laem Chabang Port, Mr. Chalermchai Mekuneam (เฉลิมชัย มีคุณเอี่ยม), has affirmed that oil spills in the nearby area will not affect the local tourism.

Mr. Chalermchai stated today (July 19) that the cleanup of oil spills which leaked from the nearby UniThai dry docks would be handled by relevant agencies such as the Laem Chabang Port Authority, the Laem Chabang Tambon Municipality, and the UniThai Company. Personnel have already been dispatched to the coast areas and have been assisted by oil cleanup boats and oil cleanup chemicals to control the oil distribution within a limited area. Mr. Chalermchai stated that intesive operations have resulted in only miniscule amounts of oil still remaining in the water.

The director stated that the spill area was 10 kilometers from Pattaya Beach and Bang Saen (บางแสน) Beach, but will definitely not be allowed to affect tourism.

Earlier today Mr. Boonlert Nomsin (บุญเลิศ น้อมศิลป์), the Mayor of the Tambon Laem Chabang, also led a team of municipal officials to assist with cleanup efforts.

He said there are only "miniscule" amounts of oil remaining in the water. Good, does that mean that the rest is on the beaches or they've sucked it up and removed it for safe storage or disposal?. :o

No need to worry then . It's being taken care of by experts in their field.
