Rayong province’s Mae Ramphung beach hit by oil spill

RAYONG, 22 September 2014 (NNT) - An oil spill has hit a one-kilometer stretch of the Mae Ramphung Beach in Rayong province.

Related agencies have gone down to the beach area to collect samples of the spill and have determined that the oil slick resembles asphalt flakes or used bunker oil. The samples were collected in front of the Khiang Talay Resort and the Wang Thong Resort.

Wichai Sritawan, an official from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resource Region 1, stated that the samples would be sent to the department’s research center for investigation.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old tourist from Kanchanaburi province, has experienced rashes on parts of his body after venturing into the beach waters. The rashes were believed to be an allergic reaction to the oil spill.

Why is anyone surprised - you can go down to the city beach of Rayong and see oil in the water every day of the week. There's a huge refinery on the point and out at sea there is a queue of oil tankers, doing what they do -cleaning out their bilges to load up with fresh oil. Leakages and spills are part of the quotidien and especially in countries where they don't give a f..k about the enviroment and where there is corruption and enormous amount of petro dollars flying about!

Worked in many industries on the Eastern Seaboard and Environmental consciousness is not a feature of the business model. They simply do not give a dam. Air ,soil and water pollution is a given for the majority of operators who are fully aware that the Thai Environmental services are inept, understaffed and totally inexperienced. They consider pollution as collateral damage to development and off course profit. Just another area that this country ratify to gain national and international credibility, but do nothing to implement.

Shhhh! The refinery is owned by you know who?

In any Western country this company would have been closed. Inspected by independant body. Fined out of existence. And the remnants would have been finished by Civil suits.

But here it would be un-Thai, detrimental to National Interests and costly to the you know, - owners. Shhhh.
