Hey all,

Just need some advice about the following:

My current Non-O visa expires on August 1. I will do a visa run on July 31 and get a further 3 month stay allowed I guess. Now the question is, I do not plan to go for a visa extension because I do not have a wedding certificate ( The first time I got the Non-O visa the guy at the Embassy in Australia said he didnt care if I was married or not and just gave me the visa.)

My wife and I will have a thai marriage certificate within the next 2 months, so by the time my next entry stamp will expire, I will have all the doccuments I need to properly get a Non-O visa so I would like to know, will an embassy in a neighbouring country issue my with another Non-O marriage visa even though my last one just finished, or will they hassel me for not going for an extension? Is there a limit on the number of non-O marriage visa's you can get (without qualifying for extensions)

Also, where would be the best place to obtain my next Non-O marriage visa in Malaysia?

Thanks for your help and let me know if you think I might encounter any problems, I would of gone for the extension but I wont have the Thai marriage certificate before my current visa expires so I have to just get the new non-o visa.

Cheers.

I had a similar problem (insufficient funds for extension, it had been a lean year).

Went to KL in March this year, multi-entry absolutely zero problems, applied in the morning, collected visa next morning.

Had copy of wifey's ID and passport, marriage cert, passport photograph, 500 Ringit. Took the missus as well, don't know if that made any odds (she did some talking about who knows what).

I prefer KL to Penang (who appear to not be issuing multi non-o to some people), embassy is easy to find (5 mins from Ampang park LRT station), no need for an agent, get there early (9 AM) no significant queue.

I wouldn't make a habit of it, just in case the visa chap thinks you're trying to avoid the financial requirements of an extension.

The above is probably the only place you are likely to be able to obtain in the area. Penang seems to feel first application should be single entry from recent reports (although if you already have a visa from them they will issue a multi).

But I do not understand your last paragraph as if you do not make a visa run until the end of this month you will have over 3 months. Get married in 2 months leaves you plenty of time to extend your stay if you can meet the requirements. You can make the application on the last day of your permitted to stay if need be.

Thanks for the replys. Ok, heres the situation. My last Non-O expired August 1 but I did a visa run the day before it expired so I am stamped in untill October 28. We will have our marriage certificate in afew weeks and I also have my school holidays in the middle of October so I guess I will be making a visa trip to Malaysia some time mid October. My wife will be with me and we will have our wedding certificate, and copys of everything else we can get. So my questions are as follows ( this is my first visa run to a SE Asian country as this is only my 2nd Non-O visa as i got my first one in Australia last year )

1- I dont have to much spare money, and I know Penang is a little cheaper than KL so would I have more difficulties getting a Multi entry 1 year Non-O visa in Panang, or would it be easier to just go to KL?

2- I hear sotries that I need to show a ceartain ammount of money in my bank book, is this true because I have never heard of needing to show funds to get a visa, I thought that was only if you were going for an extension that you would need to show funds?

3- Is there any other problems we might encounter (I dont have the money to get the visa refused and the trip being a waste of time? )

4- Any thing else we should take that would help?

5- How many nights would we need to stay in Penang for ( we will fly there so we would also like to have a hotel booked to save headache ? )

6- Where would you reccomend a decent/ clean/ comfortable hotel in an area close to the embassy?

7- Should we use a visa agent or just go to the embassy ourselves and if so, are these visa angent reliable and easy to find?

Sorry for all the questions but I would just like to book everything in advance cause I see some cheap air asia flights at the moment. Cheers.

1. From recent reports KL was more likely to issue a multi entry for first time applicant. The phone numbers of agents in Penang have been posted if you want to check with them directly. The wife might also help if you do direct but you might end up with a single entry.

2. The money in the bank is required for extensions at immigration and can be used by those over age 50 to help obtain a multi entry O visa at Penang from reports. Have not heard of it being used for those of employment age but if you have would take bank passbook.

3. You should get at least a single entry - but believe KL is the more likely to issue multi at this time.

4. A smile.

5. On night in Penang if workdays and submit before noon and pickup in afternoon (about 1400).

6. The is no Embassy on Penang. The Consulate is in a residential area. Any Georgetown hotel is in taxi range. Most people that can afford about 1,000 baht per night like Hotel Continental.

7. Some hotels have agents and Chula street has several around the Swiss Hotel that many use. Unless the agent is sure they can obtain a multi entry I would do myself the first time as having the wife with you might help.

I have never [O.K. twice] had any trouble in Penang obtaining 1 year Non O visas. I did provide financial evidence but my bank statement was clearly not scrutinized as I had Four hundred thousand three hundred Baht in my account five days before I applied and clearly I would have been under the required ammount at the precise time of application. Maybe I was lucky, and urge you to take on board the advice of lopburi3 and Crossy. GOOD LUCK!
