richard peters
Jimbo 2014 is mostly correct and even though I met my very conservative wife in Pattaya, many see it as a disgrace to live there and go out with westerners. sawadee1947
oh boy! Here come all the usual TV negitive comments about money hungry Thai women! Unfortunately it seems many many TV members never got out of the bars or massage parlors when looking for a woman. Clue: If you are looking at women who want money for affection or sex...you will find women who's priority is money, money, money. I and most of my farang friends here in Thailand are married to good, loving and respectable Thai women. Hard to believe for the bar guys and sexpats, but my wife had never had a boyfriend before me...yes a real virgin. Popular Post Gecko123
Most decent Thai women would not be seen dead with a westerner, They tend to keep to there own , Asian, they look down on Thai women with western men , they keep to there own big money people, Does anyone agree with this comment? I don't necessarily agree with the above statement, but I do think that there is definitely a stigma attached to Thai women who become romantically involved with Westerners, and I would say it is widespread, if not universal. The assumption is that the foreign male/Thai female met in a prostitution venue of one type or another. One can debate until the cows come home whether this assumption is fair or not, but the truth is, many many foreign male/Thai female relationships do take root in prostitution venues. I also think that a "good" Thai woman (one who is not involved in the "entertainment" industry) would definitely weigh this potential stigma before getting involved with a foreign guy. Thais can come across as being exceptionally laissez-faire about prostitution. I think this is because of several factors. Thais seem to see sexual needs as a human need, which is best satisfied than repressed. Thais seem to have a "you choose your own path in life' attitude which makes them less inclined to sit in moral judgement of others. I also think that in a hard-scrabble environment where opportunities aren't abundant, people can have a 'You gotta do what you gotta do' attitude, and sometimes rationalize prostitution as an evil necessity for survival. But I would caution foreigners against interpreting this to mean that Thais think prostitution is wonderful and perfectly socially acceptable. I don't think it is. Consider for a moment, a poor village girl who dropped out of school in 8th grade, marries her childhood sweetheart, has a kid or two, divorces, and then suddenly heads off to Pattaya, and a few months later returns home with tales of having met a foreign guy who is now showering her with lavish gifts (cars, monthly allowances, buying land/building a house, monthly allowance, gold chains, etc.) Overnight her social status morphs from dirt poor to one of the richest people in town. Of course a lot of people are going to be jealous and envious of her. They deal with these negative emotions by labelling her a prostitute. Additionally, Thais are becoming increasingly aware of how Thailand is viewed overseas as a haven for sex-tourism and are deeply embarrassed and resentful of how they are perceived overseas. The new prime minister of Thailand has been especially outspoken about this, and raised awareness of this issue considerably. The internet, cable TV and increased fluency in English has accelerated this awareness as well. In Western media, almost invariably when Thailand is mentioned it is in the context of sex-tourism. I was just watching an episode of 'Eastbound and Out." Danny McBride was showering his wife with dollar bills saying "Dance! Dance! Let me see them titties! Make believe we're in Bangkok. You're not a lady boy are you?' I can recall an episode of 'Two and a Half Men' with a similar message. Hangover II is another example of Thailand being depicted as a sex-tourism destination. If you go back home, after a visit to Thailand, tell me you won't get knowing looks from your friends about what you were up to while you were here. I am well-aware that inter-racial relationships are becoming more and more prevalent and socially acceptable, but I don't believe this changes the truth of what I am saying above. If this ignites a firestorm of controversy, please don't blame the messenger.
spidermike007
This is,of course, complete nonsense. There are gold diggers in every culture and every country; men and women! My wife knows exactly how much income and capital I have. Was this a significant factor in her decision to live with me? No. What she said was: I see from the way you talk to people you are polite and have a good heart; you dress in a way that tells me you are a confident person; look after yourself; you use every means you have..dictionaries..internet..etc.to make sure we understand each other, so you are as clever as me! You look after your children in a way that no Thai man ever does, and that is the most important thing for me; and now you look after my children just the same way. Sure I am happy you have enough money for us to live, but I need to have my own money, not my family's and not yours. I have never met a woman in the US who did not want money. Many say they do not want money. But, it is only jabbering. All want money, or security. Nothing wrong with wanting some financial security. What is wrong is the extent the Western woman will go to try to convince us it is not about the money! Sounds like you have a good wife. Good on you! Farangs, like myself, usually only shout or yell when they are very mad or there is danger. Here in Issan where I live, almost all Thai people shout at each other all of the time while just having a normal conversation,,across the room across the street or standing two meters apart, they shout at each other! And yet, they think is is so bad if a farang raises his voice on the rare occasion when they are very upset or afraid of something dangerous!!! Can you please explain why it is bad to shout on occasion for a good reason if you are farang .. and O.K. to shout all of the time for no reason if you are Thai?? This is a serious question I have been wondering about for a while now. This is my opportunity to get an answer from a Thai... Please do not shout the answer! vaughnyb
congratulations sir but I have lived here a long time and the woman you have is an exception not the rule of thai women. Lets not for get this thailand is a reverse dowry system. money is in the culture and tradition. yes sir you have the exception...enjoy! Hard to believe for the bar guys and sexpats, but my wife had never had a boyfriend before me...yes a real virgin. I have never met a farang who claimed his Thai wife was a virgin at the time they married, and will admit I am intrigued. Any additional details you would care to share about your relationship with your wife would be appreciated. I am curious about things like: how old you and your wife were when you met. how old you and your wife were when you married. how you met. the education level of your wife/your education level your wife's socio-economic status at the time she met you your socio-economic status at the time you met your wife where you met (in Thailand or abroad? where in Thailand?) how long you have been married do you think financial gain played any role in your wife's decision to marry you. the occupations of your wife's parents at the time you were married a lot of questions Gecko...I will answer a some for you. My wife was a university grad working in a bank in Thailand as a computer specialist when we met. I was a university educated arborist/ horticulturist working in the US. Neither of us had ever been married before and neither of us had planned to be married. She was 34 and I was 48. We have been married 13 years, have a 6 year old child and have lived together in both Thailand and the US. My wife's father died when she was young and my wife has supported her mother since she graduated from the university. Life is not always easy, we have had our ups and down, but I have a good wife and a good marriage. The point I am trying to make is that the Thai woman I married is about a far from the money hungry, uneducated selfish play for pay Thai girls as you can get and I know there are many more like her. I a man is looking for a good woman he needs to look at good women.....simple. I think I am a lucky man. I hope that satisfies your curiosity Gecko! Beyond that, a couple of arms and couple of legs might be helpful, but not really necessary. Humour tends to go down quite well. As to the "no-no", well that's simply the opposite of my first statement. Small wallet and big brain - you're finished!

If you cannot communicate, how can you possibly have a meaningful relationship? From my experience, communication is very important to Thai women, so this comment is a little strange. But lets not forget that ordinary hard working men find women who are on the same level financially and they are happily together. So I guess the "no money no honey" could be only a stereotype. However I hear from some Thai educated women that they would prefer to date somebody who has a stable job which is understandable. My wife was not a bargirl. She worked in a bar but she was Cashier. 15 years as a bar-owner and this was told to me many times. In a friend truck one day on the way to a day of golf. Three passengers were elevating their Thai Wife to the status of Mother Teresa or the Virgin Mary. Driver turned and said very loudly, "Am I the only person in Thailand to marry a whore?" Very quiet then.

If I want to know I will find out by myself This is the best answer on this whole thead (and all the better for being from the horse's mouth, as it were). My own wife could have said exactly this. ( Her main complaint about her ex-husband, a Thai of course, is that he shouted a lot!!) And if you (the guy above in his brusque reply, for example) don't know what the "language of the heart" is, I pity any woman you get involved with. This reply is best because it sums up what any woman, anywhere, would want in a man..... PS My first serious gf in Thailand was a 35 yr old virgin. She announced it to me as if it were a "selling-point". I discovered later that she was telling the truth. However, although she was extremely well-off financially, she was the only Thai woman I have met whose overriding interest in getting together with me was financial. For that reason alone, I backed off. Edited September 25, 2014 by blazes

We are many different shades of brown I think! All are colored except the transparent people. And I can see right through them...no problem. P.S. I don't think farang means white if that is what you are insinuating. When I say farang, I mean not Thai. I have friends of many races here in Thailand and around the world. Thai men smoke. Thai men do not listen. Thai men have small penises. Thai men are lazy. Thai men go out too much. Thai men do not look after their health. These are my wife's pronouncements. Of course these are generalisations and I am sure there are many good Thai men but the majority of Thai women do not have easy access to them. I know two very fine and well respected Thai women whose fathers had mia noi. One never married and one has me. Thai women want a man who is well endowed and can give them really good sex on demand which culminates in the woman's orgasm. Thai women would like a man who is financially secure enough to enhance the Thai woman's lifestyle. Not rich just enough to shop at Makro, eat out at nice restaurants and drink coffee anywhere. Thai women want a man who improves the home - paints and cleans. Thai women want a man who is good to their family and cares for their children. Thai women want a man who puts the wife first in their priorities while caring about themselves enough so as not to have all the bad habits listed in the first paragraph. Thai women want a man who appreciates all the woman's good qualities and tells her. Thai woman want a man who is affectionate and who often expresses his love or admiration for her and her children.
