Tourism on Bangkok's Khao San Rd sees little impact from Koh Tao murder

Upset post # 24

Instead of blaming the insensitivities of the thai people.....look at things the other way.....their own kind has been murdered in thailand in a gruesome manner and many of their own kind has been robbed or scammed, yet these insensitive tourists return to patronise the locals as this is the only place that they most probably can afford to buy cheap garbage, use drugs and party cheaply and maybe even get sex for cheap or free without realising that they look like poeple with no sense of dignity or pride as they still come here despite whats happenning to their own kind. A reflection of what upbring and society that these insensitive tourists are!

So by analyzing your post we can conclude that you are an insensitive foreigner who in reality has no idea and probably little or no contact with the realities of life here in tourist resorts and the general routine of lawlessness.

The reality of Thai tourism is that tourists will always flock to the world's biggest adult playground because they are so many things here under one roof they can't get elsewhere, at least for the price. Great hotels, beaches, shopping, food, diving etc and then all the stuff that goes on after dark. The recent murders are horrific but it will not stem the tide in general. Some Brits may be put off for awhile because the story is so high profile at home, otherwise I think it's fair to say most other nationalities might know of the story but it wouldn't sway them to go elsewhere. As western visitors drop off because they've done Thailand the new emerging countries will make up the numbers, You can see already everywhere being over-run by the new travelling masses from China and Russia. The numbers will remain but the demographics will change but as far as Thais are concerned they won't care a jot who comes spends their money here. That is the harsh reality of it. You don't want to come to Thailand, fine, plenty more do.

By reading Upsets post i deduced he was talking about Brits and other farangs, who continue to break laws and have no sensitivities about their countryman/woman who have recently died. When farangs actually show some remorse and ban KT,maybe Thais will take some notice even if it is only about money.Until farangs act as one, nothing will change, social media would be a good start.

Koh Tao murders will have zero impact on tourism, as long as Thailand has affordable hotels, more tourists will come in. Maybe tourism from west will not increase, but there is a new middle class in developing countries like China,Turkey,India,Brazil, and guess what, they spend more and more money on International Tourism every year. Thailand never attracted quality tourists from the west anyway, only pensioners and backpackers .

Strange then, isn't it, that those "backpackers and pensioners" still spent shedloads of money here (figures from 2012 provided by the Thai DoT).

This tragic incident may have made a lasting impression on the rest of the world with the international coverage of just how unproffessional, untrained, uncaring, and how some appear to be seekiing image building publicity for themselves and theirs.

Much of the media coverage, police statements/controdictions, media interviews, third party ramblings, etc may/could be seen as an embarasment to not just the small island involved, but the nation of Thailand itself.

A good self apprasial may be for the Thia to coduct polls to se if this is a reflection of a majority of thia thinking/acceptance or a minority, Lots of luck

I really hope you don't live in or benefit in anyway from Britain.

You clearly hate us.

Says the poster who went to KSR on holiday once and knows everything about Thailand.

There is a word for you, but I am not going to get suspended for using it

What a relief it must be for the parents of the victims, that their childrens brutal murder don't affect the holy Thai tourist-numbers!!

Sensitivity is clearly not part of Thai culture!!coffee1.gif

Its sad how so.many aspects of Thai culture are actually completely anti Graeng Jai.

Hence why they have a word for it,because Thai culture completely lacks it.

The deaths were very tragic, but just about everywhere on earth, the locals will be concerned about the impact on tourism.

Nothing will stop your average sex tourist turning up in Pattaya or Soi Cowboy and Nana, apart from a nuclear bomb. The backpackers, these are the very people you would think who are most likely to not really want to turn up after the tragic event. But even the backpackers, they know that Thailand is safer to travel in than most other countries.

Brand "Thailand", it's so strong, the tourists will still keep coming in increasing numbers.

Koh Tao should market the island as the place to come for a gripping, realistic 'murder mystery' experience.

The trip is based on an actual murder being committed by some Thai men, and you have to try and solve it whilst you're there - as the police are completely stupid, and just spend the entire time holding press conferences and posing for photographs.

The general backpacker attitude towards such things is somewhere between "no worries, mate" and "huh, what?"

And all negative things are just brought upon you by your own negativity.

If someone printed up a bunch of fliers telling of this incident and passed them around KSR then maybe (make that MAYBE) a few will alter their destinations.

No effect on a place 500 miles away?

With dozens of places hawking bus/boat tickets to get there.

Go down to Ratchadamnoen (sp?) any evening around 6pm and you'll see all the buses loading up.

Next stop is the jetty where they get on the boat.
