Ios8 takes 4.5gb! Do I need?

Hi I've got the littlest storage ipad....16gb but it seems less.

Offered the upgrade to 8 I checked my storage was almost full.

I emptied podcasts viseos photos as much as poss and now have 6.1 gb free.

But if the new system takes 4.5 what am I left with? Not enough I reckon.

So is it a really worthwhile upgrade and I start trying to empty out another gb, and still will be pretty short of space?

Thanks

I suppose the new software overwrite the existing software. Therefore if your existing OS is 3GB and the new is 4.5GB, you'll lose 1.5GB of storage at the end of the day.

But Apple has just recalled the ios 8 due user complaints. Do not upgrade yet.

Overall it's advisable to do major upgrades, in any computer systems, only after a month or two after the releases so that the bugs has been sorted out.

But to answer your question, it takes on average 500-800 MB extra space. (See below)

And please note that an OTA (Over the Air) needs more space then when upgrading via iTunes.

Summary Space used on iPad air and iPhone 5

===========================

Upgraded my iPad Air

Capacity: 27.4 GB
Available space: 23.2 GB
Available Space after upgrade 22.4 GB, so on my iPad it takes an extra 800 MB of data

Upgraded my iPhone 5

Capa: 57.1 GB
Avail before installing: 26.86 GB
Avail after installing: 26.36 GB, so on my iPphone it takes and extra 500 MB of data.

Download the update to your computer and apply it via option+click (or ctrl click on windows i think) on the restore button in iTunes - you can select an alternative .ipsw - which will be the update you downloaded previously.

Here are the direct download links;

Phazey, question. Why should you download them from that link, because if you connect your iDevice to iTunes it will find the 8.0.2 update automatically and will download the correct software directly from the Apple servers.

You're right I guess, I think it's a habit I have developed over the years - possibly a good method to downgrade though (8.0.1 anyone ?)....It's just my way :)

Have you tried downgrading that way ? I would like to know if that works, but I don't wanna risk bricking my phone. I could try it with the phone of the misses (tempted) ;)

IOS 8 seem to have some more issues.

It appears that there may be a serious bug with the "Reset All Settings" option in iOS 8, causing users who activate the feature to lose all of their iWork documents stored in iCloud Drive. According to multiple posters on the MacRumors forums, using the "Reset All Settings" option under General --> Reset has caused documents to be permanently deleted from iCloud Drive.

Anyway I upgraded and approve of the Safari change (though they didn't fix the back button being so near the nearest bookmark....not good on a mini)

Has anyone else found Thaivisa app getting a blank screen for some seconds on startup and have had repeated crashes one day?

Definitely has changed behaviour not for the good.

Another thing on iBooks which I use every night in the dark last thing for bedtime reading I like to turn the light down to near minimum.

I do this by pulling up the control panel from the bottom of the screen and turning the main brightness to minimum......which works ok. I then make it dimmer still by going to the brightness button for iBooks top right of screen. I now find that as I turn down there comes a difference in brightness for two sections of the screen. This may be to tell me this is some sort of optimum brightness but whatever it's too bright for me.....or is it just a fault?
