Thailand mulls ID wristbands, curfews for tourists

"Thailand's image as a tourist paradise has been badly damaged by the brutal murders of British holidaymakers David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23 earlier this month."

Wrong.

It has been damaged by the incompetence of the investigation, the initial unwillingness to blame Thais, the harassing and beating of migrant labourers to force a confession, the publishing of pictures of the victims in the press, the crass concern over tourist numbers rather than catching the foul scum behind these murders and now this latest piece of insanity about wristbands.

The murders, as terrible as they were, could conceivably happen elsewhere, the utter travesty of an investigation that followed them is another matter. That is what has damaged Thailand's image as paradise.

You reap what you sow.

Bang on the money!

Making them wear yellow hats and red gum boots would make them a lot more distinguishable if you go looking for them. Also as a bonus the sun keeps off their heads and the sand does not get between the toes---I hate that. NOW what about this murder thing---What do you mean WHAT MURDER !!!

Seriously, for a minister to come up with such an action, even think of it.... shows ignorance.. What next... with all the people falling from balconys... would the condominiums be required to have a safety net? Or would it be cheaper and an added income to the country if police escorts could be made available to people taking a tour or police maids.

I seriously ask why they do not tag some of the politicians? because they are the ones escaping the law into neighboring countries and gaining refugee status and passports to travel internationally free....Does she really think this is going to help in the case of the poor ones murdered... it is easy to cut off their arm or their leg and free them of these Dog tags... who is going to monitor this 24/7? Who is going to determine which places a person is allowed to go. This is not going to attract people coming to Thailand to get dog tagged!

Amazing Thailand!!! Whats next?

Ten - twelve years back the state of Florida, USA... had a rash of tourist forced over and made to stop - then robbed, assaulted and some murdered... They were almost all tourists... How did the robbers/muggers/murderers know? The rental car stickers on the cars... After a Brit couple was murdered, Florida passed a law requiring the removal of all identifying tags, stickers, plates from rental cars... The problem subsided ...

They picked on tourists thinking they would more likely have cash and valuables and not be wary of such things..

I hope this idea that has come up in the Thai Government dies a quick and silent death... This dumb idea surpasses anything to date.

Yeah I remember that. It mostly happened in Miami. The crooks would bump the back of the car at a traffic light & when the driver got out to check the damage they were car-jacked at gunpoint.

Haven't heard about it in years, since they got the rental car stickers off the cars.

=====

Tourist are ALREADY supposed to carry their passport to the toilet/beach/bar/restaurant/white-water rafting trip etc...

Just have EVERY hotel put up a BIG sign encouraging tourists to carry a hotel business card in their passport, which would accomplish the same intent as this STUUUUUUUPID idea from TAT.

Is this just a Malaysian newspaper trying to spread dirt about Thailand? Is there any Thai news report on this?

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/30/us-thailand-britain-murder-idUSKCN0HP08520140930

Nothing to do with Malaysia.

Except that it's reported in a Malaysian Newspaper (a tourism competitor to Thailand). The Reuters report is an exact copy. Who picked it up from who?

Did you not see the byline on this? https://twitter.com/MimiSawitta

The notion that a) a Malaysian newspaper would make this up (including quotes) and then b)Reuters would run with it, is a little surreal.

I dont believe anything i read, except my own ramblings. If it smells like BS ..............

Much better (a bit higher idiocy) if you plan to take a chip to every tourists neck and make a tattoo to their mouths, like for the dogs in EU. The chip would been really cheap, only 99 USD by borders, but for families and groups 10% discount.

If some-one may get any infection may recieve promotion price for treatment, only 399 - 899 USD in special private hospitals.

IF NO-ONE wants to come, just send here the money ....

The sheer stupidity of these cretinous people is utterly immeasurable. In the equation of life that philosophers the world over have tried to factor over the millennia I doubt any would or could possibly believe there could be a people so devoid of intelligence, logic and common sense as the Thai.

I actually believe microbes have more intelligence.

Logging, monitoring and controlling an annual transient population of between 16 - 20 million foreigners by a country that has yet to implement a single functioning controlled pedestrian crossing anywhere in its land?

Dictionaries will need amendment in defining degrees of imbecility courtesy of the Thai.

Did you ever spend a minute of thought what person you would be if you were born in Thailand?

Or, pray tell, can you tell me what you personally did for the western world to have this wonderful democracies and perfect police/judicial systems that makes you look down on less developed countries with such a vengeance?

LT,your thought process needs adjustment if you actually believe everything you read on TVF.While you are adjusting, get that BS alert checked as well.

It could make for a good film plot though:

Just add a little red light to the tag which starts blinking when your visa is about to expire, than you have to go on the run to avoid being caught.....

Hang on, this sounds familiar....

Oh yeah Logan's Run has already been made!

I visited thailand when I was 21 in 2006 and fell in love with it. I saved for 7 years to move here and now the country is just turning into a joke.

RIP amazing thailand

Err, it never was amazing. It is as it always has been and certainly it is no disco.

The incomprehensible meets the inexplicable midwifed by the stupid and invariably produces the just plain silly. But, this time, they certainly seem to be pushing the boat out on the daft ideas of the century front.

I love it, its gone viral already, International papers have really picked up on this one... and coming from an actual minister of tourism rather than a barstool is simply awesome as a source cheesy.gif ..............way to go Thailand clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif

It'll be safe aright just because everyone will be holidaying somewhere else.

Now lets see them blame the International press for printing it and responsible for any bad fallout or damage to tourism ...... you KNOW its going to happen wink.png
