Thailand mulls ID wristbands, curfews for tourists

Next bright idea will be tracking implants.

Tourists are usually adult and expect (or should) to be treated as such. Tighten up safety procedures; clamp down on the long-running scams; rein-in the crooks, small and big, and get serious about it ... but for God's sake, don't nannysit the tourists!

“The next step would be some sort of electronic tracking device but this has not yet been discussed in detail.”

Oh, this will be a paradise for tourists, treated as criminals with electronic devices.

Are these people serious coming up with ideas like that?

Just what the situation calls for - a big red flag calling me out to every pickpocket, scammer & motothug in Thailand as a tourist... Maybe they could just paint bullseyes on our foreheads as we come through immigration instead.

But no. This is just another hair-brained boner idea to try & compensate for the real problems no one really wants to fix. Surprising that anyone would float crap like this, in a place where face is supposedly so important.

Oh wait -it COULD be a great new opportunity for collecting "fines" from those who fail to wear their bracelets...

Why are people complaining this perfectly sensible safety strategy which is already in place in Europe and the USA.

How dare farang come into our wonderfully safe paradise and complain about this.

If they buy the correct visa which costs a mere 1 milllion baht per week then they wil of course be exempt as they are QUALITY tourists.

Great advert for the country , you need an escort from your own personal bodyguard for a trip down Family Mart to get 20 fags and a half bottle of Mekong

Perhaps you should clarify that remark for the sakes of our American cousins. By getting 20 fags you mean cigarettes.biggrin.png

We have just had the "push bike" debate on another thread. I wouldn't want there to be an unfortunate misunderstanding.cheesy.gif

2 nations divided by a common language.

Thanks for the translation. I think you could find plenty of fags close by, without walking way down to family mart. Some would prefer riding their pushee bike while searching out the fags.

Twenty in one day is pushing it... that's got to hurt..~

Maybe a card to pack in the wallets of tourists would be a better Idea, Or a plastic ID card to pack in a pocket, a bit

more subtle than wrist bracelets. I don't want to be a larger target than I already am.

I cannot believe how hard the Thai tourist minister is working to drive tourism in Thailand to zero.

His suggestions are past laughable and go directly to best ways to end all tourism in Thailand.

Really not sure how he got this job, or who his advisor's are but time to look for replacements. coffee1.gif

First, off its a she,

Second, she was a military appointment

Third, the good PM sanctioned her

Fourth, This is Thailand who listens to advisor's here ?

Personally I would like ex pats to proudly wear orange wrist bands, so as not to offend red or yellow supporters while tourists could wear turquoise wrist bands to indicate their lack of knowledge of Thai customs and general Thainess. I believe it would help protect ex pats from attack as we are generally not in a financial position that can survive such misdemeanors but are of great use to our beloved host country where as tourists are just here for a few weeks or days and are not as important as the ex pat community.

So many of these farangs come here and in a fit of pique throw themselves to their deaths in Chon Buri or elsewhere, having been dumped by a beautiful and classy young Thai lady, why does anyone care about them? I will be proud to show Thailand that I am an English teacher and wear my orange wrist band with great pride and honour.

Well said sir...in U.K. many people wear tags for their protection...how dare anyone be critical of Thailand for such a bold and innovative move...well done Land of Smiles.....perfectly dealt with as always...Thailand is 'Amazing' and the most popular tourist destination annually and deserve a higher quality of tourist to match the Thai experience on offer

My guess is Toshiba already has the contract for the tracking devices. The Minister is former CEO at Toshiba Thailand.

right, but she didn't became CEO because she was/is capable, only because her parents ever bought 47% shares of Toshiba Thailand.

Toshiba must be really happy that they got rid of her!

Is this for real - or just a 1'st of April joke? Are theese guys really born with a brain? To have officials in high position making theese rediculous suggestions is not the best publicity for Thailand. Yuo can't help asking yourself: Does theese officials get there job because of intellegence or by lottery and nepotism

it gets worse... they are having yellow ones for Chinese and Black ones for... well you know where, white ones for European's and pink ones for Gay tourists

Actually most Thais would not see any wrong with that idea...

What are the proposed curfew hours?

Like when you were 6 years old, be home in time for your tea. Bedtime at 8. Wearing your ASBO ankle bracelet.

I'm really so much looking forward to this.

Am I allowed out in my garden after 8pm, it is walled and rather tasteful.

There is a saying, "put brain in gear before opening mouth"

It's actually -

But the brain in gear before engaging the tongue.

It's an onomatopoeic play on tongue and clutch (engine in gear, engage the clutch)

Tagging tourists . . . ! w00t.gif

I can see it now . . . go through immigration, get your passport stamped & then . . . 'this way prease.... next!'

fly-tag-for-calf.jpg

Yes, the falang has virtually always been regarded as the cash cow...or buffalo. So this is the logical progression if these 'plans' mull to fruition! laugh.png

This is not a Thai bashing, this is a joke that a Thai teacher told me today!!!

A man wanted to become smarter and richer. He decided to go for a brain surgery so he went to see the doctor. The doctor told him that he had 4 choices:

1. A Japanese brain for 100,000

2. A Jewish brain for 80,000

3. An American brain for 60,000

Or 4. A Thai brain for 200,000

The man asked why the Thai brain was so expensive.

The doctor answered "It's like new, never been used!

Old type of joke and I don't really believe you were told it by a Thai teacher, or in fact any Thai at all. There seems a few on here who have a "third" party "friend," my ex was like that, always used a third party, to state her belief/thoughts.

I think they should send every policeman in the country for a secret test. The really good devoted ones should be given a flourscent pink outfit with a g string. If they are devoted coppers they will be instantly recognisable.

The bad coppers can keep their old uniforms but at least the good guys will be visible and devoted to the job.

Better just to take all the tourists money when they land, herd them into camps for their own safety, then put them on their planes when their return trip is due. Amazingly Safe Thailand! Should do the tourist industry a power of good.
