Driving from Thailand to Lao

Have seen a number of contradictory remarks about driving one's car from Thailand to Lao.

One story is that you must have 100% ownership papers to enter Laos. Elsewhere I have seen the contrary.

Anyone with recent experience?

I tried it years ago.
Had a huge argument with my wife.

The immigration guy pulled his pistol because I wouldn't go away.

As it turns out it was a holiday and any government people who could have helped me were not in their offices.

I recommend against it.

I recommend you make a deal with a Thai taxi willing to do what you want.

Driving your own car across the border is very easy. From what I understand you do need to own the car outright. Definitely no hire cars etc. You will need a car passport which are easy to attain and depending on what border crossing you are using it can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 90 minutes to cross over.

You need to own the car outright. You can not take a car into Laos if you are still paying off the finance. The owner of the car must be with the car. That is, you can not borrow someone elses car that has all the documents etc for taking a car into Laos. Though I do believe that one can get special papers within Thailand to drive someone elses car but not all check points accept this.

Plenty of discussion on these sites about how easy it is to take a car into Laos. Getting a car passport also is very easy.

I have taken other peoples cars across before but they did have to sign a sort of stat dec form with copies of their ID etc to say that it is okay.

You can get a car passport easily at the local transport department. Of course NOT on a holiday.
