First Ebola case diagnosed on US soil

The bottom line is it's delusional to be confident that a debt ridden country to the tune of nearly $18 trillion and still spending big fighting wars has adequate financial resources to be able to tackle this problem as it should?

After first Ebola case, red flags emerge that U.S. unprepared for pandemic

Federal reports raise concerns US defenses stagnated, waning

The confirmation Tuesday of the first Ebola case on U.S. soil emerges against a backdrop of increasing concern in America’s medical community that preparedness for a pandemic has stagnated or slipped in recent years because of tough economic times and increasing malaise since the 2001 anthrax threat. CDC flagged several key trend lines, including congressional funding for public health emergency preparedness had shrunk by $1 billion from its highs shortly after the 2001 terrorist and anthrax attacks.

It also noted that state and local public health departments on the front lines of any health emergency have shed 45,700 jobs since the 2008 financial crisis.

- An idiot local low level judge is photographed taking is assistants into the apartment - to serve orders I suppose. Done totally unprotected.

The low level "judge" was Clay Jenkins, a Democratic member of the Dallas County Commissioner's Court. As such, he's essentially just another politician primarily involved in zoning issues, road and bridge construction, board memberships, and other bribery prone matters.. He gained notoriety recently for singlehandedly offering to house mexican minors throughout Dallas County--until the uproar from the citizens caused the plan to fold. Jenkins' best buddy on the Commissioners Court is John Wiley Price, who has just been arrested by the FBI for fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion.

I had read that a judge went to visit the family to serve the order of confinement... But he could not have been the judge as he is only a county commissioner. I lived and worked in Dallas - Fort Worth for 35 years and know all about Country Commissioners... Even the County Judge is not a judge -- (only in Texas ... wow!). I guess the ignorant fool was just showboating and now he is exposed to Ebola... what a dumb butt. Yes - John Wiley Price the consummate racial agitator... Price ... know for his rant that people kept referring to a Black Hole when referring to money going down the drain in Dallas projects - (Wiley was thinking that it was a snide reference to black women in South Dallas)... And for jumping on a citizens car while it was moving and ripping the windshield wipers off --- Yes - that John Wiley Price -- a prize winner...

Seems Liberians living in the USA think that a 21 day isolation is required for visiting family or returning family members who have been in Liberia prior to coming to America.... Wow! -- they understand this better than the CDC and the obama Administration ...

Americans close homes to Liberian travelers

Cite fears of Ebola as reason to send visitors packing

GNN Liberia documented that U.S.-based Liberians are refusing to make their homes available, deciding instead to provide visiting Liberians with hotel accommodations for 21 days, the maximum incubation period epidemiologists believe are needed for an Ebola-infected person to exhibit symptoms of the disease.

Still citing wrong debt figure. Ignorance or just dishonesty?

No one is really ready for pandemic, but US is the only country that can deal with one anywhere in the world. US is doing what can be done to assist West Africa. Who else is devoting such resources to West Africa or at the level of the US's contribution?

Do you realize how insane you sound? You bash the US and forecast the end of the US on all matters and you are nothing more than a cheerleader standing in the sidelines hoping that US will get over run by Ebola and millions will die. Pathetic person.

Ebola issue right now is a sad situation causing much suffering and fear. I have many doctor friends, clients and neighbors in Nashville (headquarters for most large medical companies) and there is concern, but no alarm. Fear and panic are coming from media and the insane websites always looking to spread fear and paranoia. I will be the first to say we have reason to be concerned when I sense problems or am told if such by those in the medical community I know and respect.

I'm starting to think the only way to combat this is with a vaccine. How far off is that?

??? I read an interview with Dr. Piot who seemed to speak very candidly. He stated US and Europe will be able to contain on its soil. He was concerned about India. He said will not go airborne, but he is concerned about a mutation increasing latency period. He said best cure is treating with blood serum from survivors. This does seem to be the key at the present time. He also said US is doing a lot, but that Germany and Belgium need to step up their efforts to assist the US.

Selfish side of me wants to go their, but an infectious disease specialist from Vanderbilt that is my neighbor and perhaps one if the best in the US seemed calm about it. Acknowledged very sad and horrible, but does not see it playing out as a big deal in US or countries with decent health care.

Trust me, part of me wants to be angry and racist about Obama not closing borders, but that is my fear and selfish instinct kicking in.

We will know pretty quickly if Obama was wrong given the contacts in Dallas. Obama is blind and bias, but he is not stupid. If this blows after after what he said and has not done, well God bless him. He will need it.

Your interpretation of what my position is - is so far off the mark as to be on another planet... I am pointing out flaws in the policy and programs and citing what should be done -- so that maybe they will do it correctly... Your take on what I am saying shows either a deliberate misrepresentation of my posts and my position or you are just too ignorant to understand it ... The Dallas Authorities DROPPED the BALL on a proper response -- I want them to correct it and hope that other states and cities do it right the first time ... And I am critical of obama and his minions and the policies of the CDC because I think they are guided by obama who deliberately wants to punish America for what he thinks are Colonial Misdeeds of long ago... obama's insistence that we do not stop people from the Ebola Hot Spot Countries from entering the USA is CRIMINAL in Nature... If you do not understand what I am saying now -- then go suck an egg...

I was quoting and referencing someone who has nothing but condemnation for the US and the West., not you. I think you truly care about what happens here, just a bit misguided.

"A Liberian man diagnosed in Texas on Tuesday remains in a serious condition.

The unnamed cameraman is the fourth American known to test positive for Ebola, all diagnosed in Liberia.

Three American aid workers were separately flown back to the US for treatment and they are all recovering."

"Serious condition" is a far cry from "critical condition." All of these patients will most likely recover.

The US isn't Liberia.

NS, I think he was downgraded to critical. The big issue is containment. If that Judge guy who gave family a ride gets it, and frankly I think he was a dumb arse for risking it, I will be a bit concerned.

Yeah, I just heard that too. They screwed up, sent him home, exposed other people, and waited too long to start treatment. If they pull him through this is will be amazing.

If others contracted it from him they will be quickly treated. The red flags are up now.

But still, the three health care workers that caught it in Liberia are recovering, and this photographer will probably recover.

Ebola isn't a death sentence if proper treatment is started right away including blood transfusions, intravenous feeding and re-hydration. If they can do that long enough for the body to kill the virus and begin to recover, the patient will live.

From what I heard is that there are some Phase I trials going on now for a vaccine with fast tracks for a Phase II trial. So a vaccine is still several years away, at least from the view of the US FDA. But the projected Phase II trial will be quite large and take place in Africa. And if the early results are encouraging the Phase II trial could be "expanded".

As for treatment options, drugs for treatment of fatal conditions can now be fast tracked by the FDA after positive results are shown from Phase II trials. But even there, most proposed Ebola treatments have not even begun human Phase I trials. The use of the Zmapp cocktail of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) broke more than a few FDA protocols and there is yet no definitive proof that one or more of the mAbs used in that cocktail was effective. There is much not being said about Zmapp. If you plumb the website you can find that most of the research money into Ebola research comes from the US military (USARIID) and not from the NIH where most medical research grants originate.

For me, I have confidence the US military spends its research money in a highly effective manner so Ebola will be stopped, but it may take some time.

Looks like they are being overly cautious now, in a good way. Young boy did not meet definitions, but they practically shut down the city . . .

South Floridas medical community went on high alert Sunday after an Ebola scare involving an ill teen visiting Miami Beach from West Africa.

Hazardous materials teams were called in. A hospital unit was quarantined. Surrounding streets were blocked.

Even so, medical experts said the probability of Ebola in this case was extremely low. But health authorities clearly were taking no chances.

It's not the wrong debt figure according to this website and just because I refuse to buy your convoluted description of public and private debt doesn't make it ignorance or dishonesty.

http://www.usdebtclock.org/

As for your accusation that I bash and forecast the end of the US on all matters I simply post links to websites which I know you don't like because they offer an alternative perspective on America's affairs, which I know many like you would prefer others not to know about.

As to your assertion that I want US to be overrun by Ebola hoping many will die simply proves how sick in the mind you are.

There is an unconfirmed report that the Dallas Ebola patient has died... I have the Israeli media source but I didn't want to bring the Israeli haters out of the woodwork... If in fact true... it likely came from a confederate who works in the hospital...

"Misguided" ... the old tactic - when you lose the argument - make sideways condescending insults does not win the day.

You said in your post ... " I have many doctor friends, clients and neighbors in Nashville (headquarters for most large medical companies) and there is concern, but no alarm."

The average doctor in America in the late 1980's knew next to nothing about the HIV/AIDs situation... so you are going to rely on your doctor friends opinion on Ebola in 2014? I would be surprised if any of them have any experience with anything like Ebola .... taking out gall stones is not epidemiology ? So - go right ahead....

I rely on my own education and experience - my post graduate education was in Public Health with a significant amount of class time in epidemiology. And I worked in the Epidemiology section and the Immunology section of the Texas Department of Health in the city of Dallas, TX at one time in my career... I think I know something about the subject matter.

A Massachusetts hospital, meanwhile, was awaiting test results on a doctor and missionary who was successfully treated for Ebola – at the Nebraska hospital which was preparing for a new patient on Sunday – but who is now back in hospital.

Dr Richard Sacra was hospitalised on Saturday and is in stable condition with a cough and conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye.

“We are isolating Dr Sacra to be cautious pending final confirmation of his illness,” Dr Robert Finberg told the Associated Press. “We think it is highly unlikely that he has Ebola. We suspect he has an upper respiratory tract infection.”

DALLAS (CN) - Texas wants a second patient "reasonably suspected of being infected" with Ebola put into protective custody in Dallas.

Dr. David L. Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, filed a motion for a temporary order of protective custody Monday in Dallas County Court.

The unidentified patient, sued as "M.W.L.," is "reasonably suspected of being infected with a communicable disease (Ebola) that presents an immediate threat to public health," the 4-page motion states.

"Further, movant has determined that proposed patient is a threat to himself or others if not immediately restrained. Further, sources charged with monitoring the proposed patient M.W.L. have observed the proposed patient failing or refusing to follow the written order of the Texas Department of State Health Services by leaving the premises of a medical facility contrary to medical directives, without permission and surreptitiously."

"In 1976 I discovered Ebola - now I fear an unimaginable tragedy" - Peter Piot was a researcher at a lab in Antwerp when a pilot brought him a blood sample from a Belgian nun who had fallen mysteriously ill in Zaire. Health workers need optimal respiratory protection for Ebola

Two national experts on infectious disease transmission Professor Dr Brosseau and Assistant Professor Dr Jones in the School of Public Health, Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, at the University of Illinois at Chicago report that Ebola can be transmitted by aerosols … i.e. fluids mixed with air. They both said we believe there is scientific and epidemiologic evidence that Ebola virus has the potential to be transmitted via infectious aerosol particles both near and at a distance from infected patients. This means that healthcare workers should be wearing respirators, not facemasks.
