Redshirt 'Mascot' Removed From LINE Sticker Store

An announcement posted on the creator of the sticker's Facebook page.

BANGKOK — The popular messenger application LINE has withdrawn emoticons depicting a red buffalo, the unofficial mascot of the Redshirt movement.

Originally, red buffalo (kwai daeng) was a nickname used to insult supporters of the Redshirt movement, as buffalos are considered a symbol of stupidity in Thai culture. However, in recent years many Redshirts have embraced the nickname in good jest and produced several products based on the unofficial mascot, including the LINE emoticon, or ‘sticker’ set, created by a Redshirt activist.

But the anonymous administrator of the "Red Buffalo" Facebook page, who created the stickers, posted an announcement today explaining that LINE has removed the stickers because of their 'slanderous' nature. The stickers were only available for 24 hours before they were removed.

According to the creator, LINE said they have the right to remove any "Stickers that may slander, injure, or attack the reputation of a particular person, nationality, or a group."

While some commentators said they managed to download the sticker set before it was removed, many expressed disappointment about missing the brief window. One of the commentators raised suspicions that Yellowshirts - political rivals of the Redshirts - may have "reported" the sticker in an attempt to have it banned.

You can bet it was an anti red that reported it to Line. Anyway, as you can make your own stickers and send them via Line not much of an incident and will probably spawn TIT for tat actions.

It doesn't how minor a matter is, or how stupid the plan, if something goes wrong for the reds it was someone else's fault. Usually a yellow, or a fake yellow, or a fake red.

Or,

it doesn't matter how minor a thing it is or how silly it might be, if it is about red shirts then it must be banned.

One can understand that just as the ISIS stickers are inappropriate these are too.

Very similar, not! Are you still in disguise?

Anyway, you can't buy them but they are still there to copy which no doubt the whole Thai social media will have done by now.

I guess if it hadn't been mentioned then there would have been no interest.

It doesn't how minor a matter is, or how stupid the story, if something involves the red shirts, you can guarantee one of the usual suspects will write a post to try and make political capital out of it.

Classic example: the recent http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/765983-jatuporn-cancels-birthday-celebration-planned-by-red-shirt-core-members/#entry8489914 thread.

Your icon is red, your personal quote is red. I think you are a closet redshirt lover, pretending to love the yellowshirts (because their leader was convicted and given a longer and harsher sentence than the vile Thaksin for similar offences).

I think you are doing satire -- which is pretending to assume the position you really oppose (like A Modest Proposal).

It's okay -- most of us just react to what we read and don't buy into Thai politics because...we are not and cannot be in Thai politics--but we can strike nice poses.

Here's your card.

LINE banned them. Was that politically motivated?

LINE is alleged to have stated:

LINE said they have the right to remove any "Stickers that may slander, injure, or attack the reputation of a particular person, nationality, or a group."

and based on that the banned a red water buffalo sticker.

yeah, I think it was politically motivated - although I do allow for it to be motivated by fear, too.

Somehow I fail to understand what Jatuporn's cancelled birthday party has to do with a red buffalo sticker blink.png

Anyway, with my ZXQ mobile I (obviously) don't use LINE. Is there anyone out here, who uses it and did have a quick look at other available stickers ?

Did you actually look at other stickers available to LINE users ?

Yes, I use it along with 400 million plus other users. An extensive range ( hundreds) of stickers available most of which are free.

I use it for many differing types of communication, very useful.

An apt description of Jatuporn for sure, too bad we can't be rid of him as easily as the stickers.

Don't let the kids see these scary!

It has been removed for the wrong reason for sure, i see nothing politic here. On the other hand this ugly crap had to be removed for the sake of good taste.

Yes, not a good idea to let the masses have a chance to choose what they like or dislike.

Because the rules changed after the coup. Don't you think that's relevant? Or maybe LINE should have known there was going to be martial law and a coup and stopped Suthep's stickers way back then. Wouldn't it be great to have a crystal ball?

It's fairly easy, rubl, what you have to do is to read the sentence before the link and then things will become clear - I'll give you a bit of help, the word "example" refers to the previous sentence, as in an example of posters trying to make political capital out of a minor matter. There, that wasn't so hard, was it?

Oh, wait a minute, that's not you doing your off topic thing is it?

Don't tell me you were trying to make a statement from which you hoped to make political capital? Stressing the faults you see in others while doing the same?

As for off topic, so far so good I'd say. We're still discussing 'red buffaloes'. That is as far as I understand of course rolleyes.gif
