Don't miss the rare “Blood Moon” lunar eclipse tonight

BANGKOK: -- Sky watchers around the globe are waiting to watch the extremely rare cosmic sight when the total eclipse of the moon and the rising sun are to happen simultaneously tonight.

On this rare cosmic sight, the sun and moon are exactly 180 degrees apart in the sky. In a perfect alignment like this, such an observation would seem impossible. This event is what celestial geometry says cannot happen.

But thanks to Earth’s atmosphere, the images of both the sun and moon are apparently lifted above the horizon by atmospheric refraction. This allows people on Earth to see the sun for several extra minutes before it actually has risen and the moon for several extra minutes after it has actually set.

For Thailand, this phenomenon is to occur tonight , Wednesday, 8 October 2014. Thai sky observers will be able to join observers in countries located within the Pacific region to have the best view of this cosmic event where the moon will turn “Blood Moon”.

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) will telecast this rate cosmic sight on its website.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind earth into its umbra (shadow). This can only occur during a full moon and when the sun and moon are aligned almost exactly with the Earth situated in the middle.

The eclipse is expected to start at 3.15 pm and will be visible during 5.25 pm to 6.24 pm.

However these times may vary slightly depending on where a person is located. The moon is expected to leave the earth’s shadow at about 8.33 pm.

In Thailand, the eclipse will be visible at 6 pm for a total of 24 minutes.

It is during this time that the moon will appear to be bathed in a red-yellow glow often referred to by many as the Blood Moon or Red Moon.

Unlike the solar eclipse, the lunar eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye.

The NARIT has however announced that it will be conducting a live telecast of this occurrence on its website. This occurrence will also be visible at three specific astronomical sites in Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Chachoengsao provinces.

As the lunar eclipse is imminent, leading astrologers from the Thai Astrology Association also issued advice for Pisces and Virgos.

For astrologers, the blood or red moon is of course interpreted differently.

A leading astrologer Chang Chaiwat, a committee member of the academic section of the Thai Astrology Association, pointed to the exact occurrence of the eclipse which according to him appears within the Pisces stars which is a water element.

His advice for Pisces people is to be wary of water related accidents.

He also warned that a worldwide natural disaster could occur during this time.

“The Pisces is a water sign which indicates water related occurrences. This means water related accidents such as the sinking of ships or boats. Most importantly is that Uranus is on the move and approaching closer. This indicates that a well-known and important personality may be lost as well as mass public mortality,” he viewed.

The astrologer also warned that Pisceans, those born between 2-12 April, and Virgos, those born between 7-16 October, need to be wary of their health, family related issues, a life partner or partners, as sudden changes can be expected.

“Pisceans are warned to take care of their health. Pisceans could be involved with legal entanglements and problems at the home front as negative changes are expected. Virgos are warned to be wary of life partners, family issues and possible break-up with partners.”

However he stressed that these are just warnings that Pisces and Virgos need to watch out for.

The best way to counter bad fortune is to do good deeds, avoid committing wrong doings and to clarify the soul. Please use your good judgment on such issues after all these tips are only a pre-cautionary warning.

The wife and I stepped out into the yard here in Chiang Rai to watch the “frog eating the moon” as they say here in the North. There was a little wispy cloud cover but not enough to spoil the event. I hope others took the time to leave their computers and witness the Blood Moon.

when the total eclipse of the moon and the rising sun are to happen simultaneously tonight.

The sun is RISING tonight???

That is one remarkable event then tongue.png

Typical lazy journalism from here where they just 'copy & paste'. The original report is clearly from the US, where the sun will be rising...

Yep. I saw the eclipse (from the eastern US), but no 'bloody' moon afterwards. Too much fog at the lower levels of the atmosphere.
