Can I own land?

Featured Replies

I heard that you need a Thai surname to own land etc, is this true? Should I change my surname to my mothers Thai surname?

Would a Thai surname be more beneficial to me than a western surname?

Car, house, land. All property?

I was born UK and have Thai birth certificate. Also, can I change my surname to my mothers without her consent? Or do I need her consent?

what name is on your Thai id card, and passport

Don't have one yet, will do in December. Hence why I ask this question. I'm concerned about bias towards half Thais with western surnames.

A Thai surname means I have to enter England with a visa due to different name passports. Even though I have dual nationality. To enter Wngland, my home country, I need to get a visa which would cause problems.

Having a western surname should not make any difference. My wife has had by surname since the day we got married and has had no problems purchasing land and etc. She even got elected as village head and served in the position for 5 years.

I think you may not be correct in your thinking about having to enter England with a visa. There are ways to get around having different names on your passports when departing Thailand. You only have to show your UK passport on check in for your flight out of the country.

Okay thank you. I was told my the Thai officials at the embassy that entering Thailand with a Thai surname and leaving Thailand with a British surname would cause problems at the airport due to mixed surnames and of course identity concerns about me.

The Thai embassy is not always a good source of info. All you need to do is prove your identity to the airline. You could make your flight reservation with your English surname.

It might also be possible to register you name using your English surname as your middle name when you take your Thai name. Or you you could change your name in the UK to your Thai name.

my stepson has a western surname, looks like a westerner and has lived all his life in Thailand. He has had no problem, going to school, university, getting employment and owning cars and land. so my advice would be to get your Thai id's in the name that will make it easy to do so. the rest will fit into place.

regarding names on passports and entering 'home' countries that is all sortable what ever the name is. passport has to match airline ticket only, exit/entry of country can be with different passport, carry paperwork that links the 2 names.

But i would stick with your birth certificate name as long as getting Thai id's is possible/easy in that name.

good luck

I don't have a Thai name but I own land.

My Thai wife with my western surname had no problem buying Thai property.
