Hi all,

I'm shopping for a new pre-paid sim card and would like to know who offers the best value plans with decent 3G/LTE coverage in Bangkok?

I was previously with True and using their Net 399 plan:

399 baht - 1GB of 3G - for 30 days - unlimited WiFi from their hot spots.

Can anyone beat that?

Thanks

True prepaid has a 3G plan for 199/month and a 4G plan for 299/month... And right now they are offer these plans with double data limits promotions

Thanks.

So is that 199/month plan the iSmart 199 which is 500MB of 3G?

500MB isn't much.

This Net 399 is 1GB of 3G for 399baht is the other option:

valid until 31/01/2015
Activation Shortcut *104*21*9#dial

I think the dtac Unlimited Happy Internet 9 baht/day and the Unlimited Happy Internet 59 baht/week are good deals.
It says you get max speed of 512kbps, kind of slow , i know. But i think those plans are really unlimited. so there won't be additional data charge.

source: http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/happy-unlimited-internet-package.html

I think it would be fast enought to receive your mails, chat on line/whatsapp/etc, google maps (lot of data stays cached on your phone anyways), and every now and then look something up on the web, audio streaming I suppose, also some low quality youtube vids might work (you could prebuffer too of course with the right app). but you probably won't be happy with it if you plan on downloading hi-res movies and stuff wink.png

I decided to use the 9 baht / day variant, and only order the addon when i am outside for a long time, and feel like i need look something up, or chat to someone.

Maybe you even want to consider using two sims (for double/tri- sim phones).

You could use one plan with fast connection, and just turn it on, when you need it for hires video or whatever, for the rest of the time just use the 512kbps plan.

Also if you are a heavy facebook, line , whatsapp user, and dont need much else, you can consider using an addon for that:
See: http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/Social-Unlimited-package.html
I think these addons will also work with some of the other addons by the way, so you might can implement some fancy strategy wink.png

About wifi: first i would check what wifis are available around your place. if its dtac/3bb/ais, i think you can order the wifi plan with your dtac sim.
dtac wifi 69 baht / 30 days
3bb (and i think this will give access on AIS access points too) wifi 99 baht / 30 days
source: http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/dtacwifi-happy.html

I ordered the 3bb wifi actually by sms, this and other ways to order it:
http://wifi.3bbwifi.com/packages_en
Note: you can also order 3bb wifi without any sim.

If all around you in your usual spots are TRUE access points, but you dont have a TRUE sim. you might can buy something for accessing TRUE wifi in a convenience store, ,or maybe some friend can order it with his/her phone if he doesnt need it him/herself, and give the access data to you. but i really dont know about TRUE. Thats just what i think it might works like.

Hope I posted anything helpful

Right now the 199 baht plan give you double data (or 1gb) as promotion - this lasts thru 2015...

And if you run out you can top up additional 1gb for 150baht... (See link lower part of page)

once you go over your limit , does it turn off or just go to EDGE speed or slower ?

It sends you a text and then you switch to edge speed at which point you can buy the 150 baht topup to return to 3G speed...

Thanks.

Is there anything we need to do to enable 3g/mobile internet on our phones?

I topped up the credit, entered the USD code, got the SMS confirmation, enabled data connection on my phone but it won't connect.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I had that True "monthly" package for a week, yes it lasted only a week (!), i blame it on Google poor translations....

Currently on the AIS 1-2-Call "Mao-Mao" weekly package, that last exactly a week and is advertised for costing just 69 Bahts, while in the end they always take an extra 5 Bahts from your credit.....

APN?

But could be a zillion things. Phone make/model? Operator? Location?

Its the Asus Zenfone 5, Adnroid 4.4, True, Bangkok

New phone so never been online with a data connection before.

Thanks

Operator? Location?

I also noticed that some of the telephone's repeaters suffer from some sort of "sinusoidal's diarrhoea", resulting in a sketchy or sometime absent connection, even if you are just 10 meters away from those Eiffelistic's structures

You may have to manually configure an APN for TrueMove H. Create it, save it, select it, restart the phone with a SIM and battery pull.

Settings, wireless & networks, more, mobile networks, Access Point Names, create/add/select

Name TRUE-H INTERNET

APN internet

APN type default (but also try default, supl)

Username true

Password true

However you can find a lot of variation in APN settings for TrueMove H so maybe best for you to Google and experiment.

Agreed. Most SIMs have the APN baked in, and most phones can read this off the SIM, and configure the APN.

While I;m not even certain this is your issue, it could be that your phone is incapable of this, so a hassle it is.

On my iPhone 4 I had to type the APN settings manually for True. With my new Sony Xperia (Android 4.4.4) on one of the menus* there's an option to "download settings for Internet and MMS" which I assumed was the APN settings, and it seems to have worked. I only mention this because Spouse has an Android 4.4 and it might be similar?

* Apps > Settings > Wireless & Networks -- More... > Internet Settings

Thanks, I went into the settings and there was an option to reset APN, which I did and then True was one of the ones listed and auto-selected.

I can't even see how to get back into it but it was somewhere under the main Android settings I think!

Yes its working thanks.

I went with the True iNet 199 that is 50% free until 2015 so its 1GB a month. Will see how that works out for now.

Note if you ever go over your 1gb you can purchase an extra 1gb of data for 150 baht... Here is a great web site interface to manage your True prepaid account:

OP, don't overlook the wifi hotspot option. It's unlimited and sometimes it's quite fast depending on time and location. Although True has more sites around BKK, I find AIS service more convenient simply because it doesn't bug you to log in all the time. I happen to have a True hotspot near me and use it all the time at home. With an outdoor access point, I can stream HD videos most of the time (with a few hiccups during action scenes). Bt 100/mo, he he.

<script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Yes getting a friend to register and give you their hotspot password would work. Some cheaper hotspot plans are restricted to only one device. If that's the case, just give your friend your MAC address so they can register it with AIS or whoever.

Only a "quality" TV member would bother to post this.

The Bt 5 is probably VAT.

TO the OP you probably noticed - nut if you didn't the iNet 100 plan give you free unlimited wifi (that does not count aginst your 1gb data plan)...

So when in a coffee shop check for Truewifi...

That being said I find the Truewifi in most places sucks biggrin.png
