Bus Stations

Does anyone know if the Eastern Bus Terminal on Sukhumvit has buses to Ayutthaya? What is the best/cheapest way to get up there from Bangkok? Once I get up there I was planning on hiring a tuk-tuk for the day to take me to all the sites, is this a recommended course of action? Thanks.

I think you have to catch the bus from Mor Chit to get to Ayutthaya.

First ... buy a Lonely Planet Guide ... well worth having if you want to do cheap!

the "best" way to Ayutthaya is subjective. My fave way if we don't drive is to do the tour boat.

third ... yes .. gotta go to Mor Chit to get a bus

4th there are some minivans that go up there too .. I THINK they leave from around Vic Monument

Probably the cheapest way to get to Ayutthaya from BKK is train. Did this about 7 years ago and it cost 30 baht 3rd. class. If I remember, on the way back we got into 2nd. class by mistake and as we couldn't be bothered to move had to pay an extra 20 baht each but it did have a/c. You'll have to check times but if you're at Don Muang you can catch train there.

There is usually a Tuk Tuk waiting at Ayutthaya station, negotiate your price first. We found a great guy who took us to a cheap, clean motel and later a tour of town and temples. "Beware" there are a lot of temples!

First off, thanks for the reply. I'm arriving in Bangkok on Saturday for the first time. I own a Lonely Planet guide. What is Mor Chit and how do I get there from Sukhumvit (Soi 13)?

Mor Chit is the Northern Bus Terminal. Get the BTS to Mor Chit or the MRT to Chatuchak Park, then it's a taxi ride.

To be honest , the train is a much nicer option, go from the central station at Hua Lampong (at the end of the MRT).
