PLEASE make sure you get a genuine copy :o

Make sure your laptop has a minimum of 256k memory. 512 is better. Otherwise, WinXP won't run.

Another alternative is the Linux programs, check out the Linux forum for advice.

But, to be honest, if you are completely new to computers then Windows XP is probably easier to handle.

Dear Mai Loo,

Windows is an operating system, and I agree with one of the posters it is tthe best system for someone not too experienced.

The laptop is probably at a knockdown price because it does not have a genuine operating system. Genuine Windows is very expensive so you should add the cost of the laptop and the cost of windows before judging whether you have a bargain.

If you have genuine windows this allows you to get what Microsoft calls security updates. Without these updates your computer will not be protected when surfing the internet, and all kinds of nasty stuff can happen to your computer.

Nowadays a computer needs access to security updates and that only comes if Windows is genuine ie unnecessarily high-priced.

Hope this helps.

Hope you are keeping well,

Try and make sure that the laptop comes with a CD with all the drivers necessary for that particular model.

Even if your Windows OS insists that it isn't genuine, there are many other avenues to obtain the security updates.

Dear Jiu-Jitsu,

I would be interested in knowing more.

Hope you are keeping well,

I sold my new system recently and now using the old one which has only 192MB and working 100%, though a little bit slow, but working fine.

Genuine Windows XP Pro should not cost more than THB5,000. Though not using windows now, but when I was using, never bought a genuine and were able to download all the security updates etc. (though such updates cause another security problem). You can safely use the pirated windows and can live without security update as they are not really critical, as long as you are using an updated antivirus (I used and found McAfee the best among them) and regular scan for spyware etc (the best one I found was Adaware)

Alternatively all the drivers can be downloaded from the manufacture's site, thanx to internet. no need to worry about the drivers.

I had Windows XP on a desktop mainly so the boy could play games. I thought it was slow and complicated and the constant pestering to update and threats that I 'might have collected some illegal software' nearly drove me nuts.

I went back to Win 2000 Pro which I picked up in Bangkok a few years ago and it is very stable, hardly ever crashes despite my best efforts. I put it on my laptop also and networking them together was a cinch.

Win 2K forever!!

That's assuming that he has both the facility to download from the internet and a way of transferring the downloaded drivers to his new laptop. A CD full of the relevant drivers is a very handy thing to have.

Drivers can be a problem with notebooks, particularly for comms devices.

Is the machine a well known brand? If so the manufacturer will have a website to help you.

Windows XP is pretty well stocked with drivers, especially if the machine is a few years old.

It is the newer ones that need specialised drivers.

Drivers can also be a problem if you load Linux.

I would ask the supplier to load Windows XP (a legal version of course) for you and show that everything in the hardware is installed.
