shoe repairer needed -- bangkok

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I bought a pair of Addidas, which had a small stitching defect where the nylon mesh connected to the suede leather at the toe. I didn't notice it for a few weeks. Now a hole is forming which promises to grow.

I need a skilled shoe fixer who won't rip me off. I'm in Banglampoo but can of course travel around Bangkok to the right shop.

Cheers,

Doug

Why bother with a shop. Just take a walk down the road, you will see plenty of cobblers working away.

Because he's looking for specific recommendations. Because I just walked down the road and didn't see any cobblers working away.

It's a classically unhelpful reply- I'm going to ignore what you asked about and tell you why you're wrong but not offer any help. Why not tell him where these cobblers-without-shops are all working away..? Certainly they're not on my street.

To the OP : I've used Pro Express at Robinson's Sukhumvit Soi 17- they've got a branch of Terminal 21 as well. I think the Terminal 21 branch is cheaper to use, not sure if that means better. But they will give the damage an appraisal and tell you whether they can fix it in-store or need to send it away to be repaired.

Thanks much. Good hard info, especially about giving one an estimate. Much appreciated.

And you gave precisely what the first reply deserved. Yes, there are cobblers down many streets, but are they any good? And can someone recommend a good one? Those were my questions. It's like asking where a good restaurant is and getting "you can walk down any street and find a restaurant".

How would you know they were any good until you tried them ?

As for a reply that says..... 'I think the terminal 21 branch is cheaper' .... You think, but you don't know. So why even bother saying it.

Oh and if the shoe needs to be sent away how do you know who is going to be doing the repair or if he is any good.

I will stick with walking down the road and giving my shoe to a cobbler. At least I can watch him work and I know for a fact his little hand cart is far cheaper to run than a shop in Terminal 21.

As for a decent restaurant, one persons wonderful meal is another's dogs dinner.

Oh oh an appraisal and an estimation are two different things.

Last thing you are aware cobblers with hand carts move around. So while he might be there one day he will be somewhere else the day after.

Ah yes, Bertty and The Secret Cobbler. One of my favourite children's books.

"I can't tell you where these cobblers are," says Bertty. "They move around, like the wind."

"But you could at least mention some possible streets as I think there aren't any where I live- at least I've never seen one on my street..."

"YOU THIINK," roared Bertty, spit flying from his mouth. "BUT YOU DON'T KNOW...!"

"Just need this shoe appraised..."

"Ha," laughed Bertty, but he wasn't smiling. His eyes were dark and empty. "An appraisal is not what you need. It's an ESTIMATE!"

"Okay... pretty sure you understood what I meant but... where do you recommend getting an estimate then..?"

Bertty said nothing. He just picked up his shoes and ran, never looking back.

The smooth soles, the mended heels, these were his and his only. He would not share the secret. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever. "Mine and mine only," he whispered. "My precious shoes..."

The movie version was terrible though. :)

All the time you spent writing that crap book, you could have been out looking for a cobbler.

You must be the only person in Bangkok who has never seen one working on the street.

I'm not looking for a cobbler. And it took me two minutes. Two minutes you could have spent giving a useful reply to the OP that would have actually helped him.

Straw poll amongst five friends at lunch today- three hadn't seen a cobbler in Bkk, one had and one wasn't sure ( 'it was a shop I think').

Obviously I reprimanded him for saying I think. :)
