"In addition to the mask, procedures have to be followed too ... for example avoiding touching one's face with contaminated fingers."

I agree with you ... sterile technique has to be maintained... but a full face transparent bubble mask as I have seen used would alleviate that problem...

I have read that there is a CDC recommendation that attending nurses and doctors should use a buddy system to watch and coach before - during and after. But it was indicated that the Dallas nurses said they were not aware of such a buddy system... and that the CDC training was overall lacking.

I know what it is like to take care of patients in a messy situation. I worked part time in the Intensive Care Burn Ward at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX to help pay my way through college. Keeping the ever present slimy foul smelling Pseudomonas bacteria that ate at the burn patients off my work smocks was near impossible. I can't imagine working in similar environment where the infectious agent was deadly ... I can only stand in admiration for people who do that.

Like these guys?

All they did was stand around outside a building for a few hours.

If those were infected with Ebola, we really are all doomed.

The state of Connecticut has joined the states of New Jersey and New York in instituting the Ebola Quarantine and other measures..... Waiting for State number four -- Pennsylvania anyone? How about Massachusetts ? The roll will begin soon...

What does that have to do with some cops throwing rubbish in the bin?

The same lack of awareness of the seriousness of Ebola. A doctor going bowling and riding the subway and a nurse flyng a crowded airplane, they had to be nuts if there was the slightest chance they could be infected.

You have to laugh. A completely pointless response in the way it's being managed, but I suppose Christie is hoping people will notice his "leadership" and forget BridgeGate. A surefire vote winner for those you've worked into a frenzy of panic.

The governors of New York and New Jersey announced Friday their states were stepping up airport screening for Ebola.

Under their new policy, the states will determine hospitalization or quarantine for up to 21 days for travelers from the affected countries.

A mandatory quarantine is called for those who had "direct contact with an individual infected with the Ebola virus," including medical workers who treated Ebola patients. In addition, people with a travel history to the affected regions but with no direct contact with Ebola patients will be "actively monitored ... and, if necessary, quarantined."

There are only 5 airports where Ebola countries can land now. Those hubs are John F. Kennedy International in New York, O’Hare International in Chicago, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Washington Dulles International near Washington, D.C., and Newark Liberty International in Newark, N.J.

That was announced on Tuesday.

State Officials picking people out is nothing to do with the DHS, like I said it's governors looking for votes.

All U.S. International airports also need to devise a plan to find and screen people who have been to the Ebola Hot Zone countries but have flown to the U.S. via a EU or other connection out of West Africa... as did Mr. Duncan and I believe Dr. Spencer did.

Here is what the State Airport Authorities in the U.S. and U.S. Immigration could do to greatly reduce the threat of Ebola entering the United States... (employ the screening and filtering program I recommend that Heathrow Airport use... as previously posted.)

Another doctor who treated Ebola came through JFK
A physician who treated dying Ebola patients in Liberia flew in to JFK on Thursday night — and stayed at an airport hotel, a source told The Post.

obama Admin / CDC mull a quarantine program for returning West African Aid Workers...

I definitely believe they should be quarantined and treated as well as possible. They have done a service to control Ebola in our stead. Perhaps quarantine centers - with very nice accommodations can be devised and even stipends and expenses paid for the 21 days... There is not that many of them in any given month and making it easy to stay in quarantine will show proper respect. They are doing more than I am willing to do and I have the time and enough level of expertise to help... These returning aid workers have taken the call - have gone - and taken great risks. There can be a balance to deal with them more than fairly and protect the public at the same time.

Here is a link to a published statement from the recently quarantined nurse. It just went online at the DMN this morning and there are already over 2000 replies in the comments. http://www.dallasnews.com/ebola/headlines/20141025-uta-grad-isolated-at-new-jersey-hospital-as-part-of-ebola-quarantine.ece

Unfortunately this was what I was afraid of when they selected CUSTOMS officers to do the screening and not use medical personnel -- general incompetence with even the simplest of tools ... the thermometer.

If they are going to quarantine them at a facility, they should at least take over some resort and escort them to the resort with full accommodations and facilities. Treating people like prisoners for 21 days is only going to make them try to avoid the situation by flying to a nearby country and crossing the border.

Thus the reason I said what I did in my post above... progressively - I would hope to see nothing like this repeated... Calm cool and collected should be the order of the day ... because if organized the Air Workers would be treated well and with respect... It can be done ... a rational system can be created... This was - what - the first one... the authorities have to work to do it better. The arrivals should be preannounced and expected -- then whisk off to privacy and civil treatment ... there is not that many of them - it can be done.

I will add to my previous statement of proper treatment of returning Air Workers... it should be turned on its head if the State and Federal Governments have any sense. Turn it into a very positive Badge of Courage ... and example to the public of their good deeds...

Returning Aid Workers should have a communication system -- notification of impending return - with trips home expedited by the Government and a receiving group awaiting at them at the airport (as I described before) and proper privacy and accommodations... There is no reason that after a few days in America that the individual could not travel to their home place with a proper vehicle -- medical van, etc. and the remainder of their quarantine done at a place near there desired home destination.

But Government Drones do not have any vision or imagination ... Hopefully lightening will strike them and wake them up. This is how a quarantine should work for deserving aid workers ... it does not have to be a virtual jail cell and interrogations. Questions of the Who - What - When - Where - Why - How and How Much could be transmitted prior to arrival by filling out an on-line form ... little need for detention at the airport..

They don't have to be treated like rock stars but a little of that would set the correct tone... Some may recall that the men who went to the moon had to be quarantined for a while upon returning to earth.. just in case...

Quarantine is necessary - just look at the confusion and costs involved checking out the hundreds who have been exposed by the nurses and now the doctor.. not to mention the fear and confusion factor... But you know Americans can do it right - if someone steps back and does a little thinking.

Would it cost some serious money ? -- Yes it would ... but a fraction of the money wasted on the fiasco prior to the announcement of a quarantine.

Don't know if this means anything, but the nurse, it appears, has a connection with the CDC. http://www.linkedin.com/pub/kaci-hickox/30/793/7b8

You aren't suggesting that a Nurse with links to CDC would be exploiting that connection to defend the CDC's policy of not employing Quarantine - are you? Well - you should because it seems obvious that she would -- and perhaps even encouraged to do so my people within the CDC ... political CYA as it may be...

Nothing much today is beyond a political angle.

I am now worried about the veracity of the claims. The article is all from one side. And it was helped to be written, according to the article, by a Dallas Morning News reporter (the one who has been appearing on CNN) who also used to be an employee of the CDC. This was a conflict of interest not revealed in the article. A huge violation of journalistic ethics.

There appears to be full disclosure at the beginning of the article. It's not unethical unless conflicts of interest are concealed.

Try as I might, I just can't seem to muster much concern over this. She's not a policy maker or public official. The nurse has as much right to speak as do any of us - perhaps more so since she's in the thick of it.
[note - I only skimmed the article, so if there was something truly egregious then I wish folks would quote the relevant portion when posting here]

It seems there are quite a few posters who take every opportunity to make a political angle out of this as well.

Yes, there are. Most if the hysteria on subjects like these are driven by political motivations and those trying to rally the ignorant aspect of their base. I hate to say it, but the Christian Right and Republican base are the ignorant fools that buy anything their heroes tell them. They are dominated by and motivated by fear in their decision making and media and politicians play on it for their own benefit.

Alot if this stuff is common sense. Right now, we are talking 2 out of like 150 people having direct contact with Duncan while he was symptomatic getting Ebola. One of those was changing or inserting his catheter and dealing with soiled linens. The kill rate in US also seems to be pretty lame and much less than some of the super bugs I worry about.

Well it seems Gov. Cuomo must have read my two post here on TVF yesterday, as he is kinda sorta employing what I suggested... In a few more days perhaps he will get it right... Guess, I need to send copies of my posts to Gov. Christie... smile.png

Under Pressure, Cuomo Says Ebola Quarantines Will Allow Home Isolation

Facing fierce resistance from the White House and medical experts to a strict new mandatory quarantine policy for all medical workers who had contact with Ebola patients in West Africa, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Sunday night that people quarantined in New York who do not show symptoms of the disease would be allowed to remain at home and would receive compensation for lost income.
