Ukraine crisis: Pro-Western blocs 'win Ukraine poll'

(BBC) Pro-Western parties will dominate Ukraine's parliament after the first elections to the body since February's revolution, exit polls suggest.

As votes are counted, President Petro Poroshenko's bloc looks set to win the most, with PM Arseny Yatsenyuk's People's Front party a close second.

Mr Poroshenko thanked voters for supporting what he described as a call for a reformist, pro-European majority.

About 3m people in two eastern regions ravaged by conflict did not vote.

Pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions plan to hold their own polls next month.

Another 1.8 million people in Crimea, annexed by Russia in March, also did not take part.

It's wonderful a nation can vote for their own destiny, not be forced into it by a foreign invasion. I love this comment in the article:

The pro-Russian Communist Party failed to clear 5%, the polls said, and may be without representation in parliament for the first time.

The people have spoken. Best of luck to a country with a very challenging future.

A bit of misdirection in calling voters "pro-western."

Former President Viktor Yanukovych (who fled to Russia to avoid prosecution for murder of protesters and impeached by parliament) was elected because of his desire to have Ukraine JOIN the EU and shut out Russian dominance over the Ukrainian economy. In fact he actively negotiated with the EU as president to the point of a date to sign for EU membership when Putin made him an offer he couldn't refuse - and complete financial bailout for Ukrainian debt and kickback for Yankovych.

So now with a newly elected president and parliament (in accordance with the Constitution!), the country has hit the Reset Button to again join the EU. This is not an issue of being pro-anything but rather being pro-Ukrainian. And much smarter about what Putin's Russia holds for the country - deceipt and subjugation. Thankfully with the military backing of NATO and the US, Ukraine can continue to determine its own destiny for a better future.

Staunchly pro-Europe, which could also be called pro-Western, as opposed to pro-Eastern. But I understand your point. Putin galvanized the country against Russia and brought out the ultra nationalists. The Pro-Europe bloc got over 50% of the votes, enough to get legislation passed easily. And for the first time since 1917, the communist party has NO seats in parliment.

All thanks to Putin! LOL
