สุนัขเฝ้าอาคาร soonak fao aakan if you are posh

or หมาเฝ้าบ้าน maa fao baan if you are normal.

Ah ok...I get it now. Thanks! I didn't know how else to describe it.

Yes, I would want to train a หมาเฝ้าบ้าน to keep away from my house anyone who would use the term สุนัข for dog other than perhaps in formal writing.

I believe that guard dogs prefer to be called สุนัขเฝ้าอาคาร much in the same way that ยาม prefer to be called เจ้าหน้าที่รักษาความปลอดภัย.

Thanks guys. This all started with me trying to describe a German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois. I also see now there is an actual Thai word for Alsation which I got totally wrong. Either way, I got it all figured out. Thanks again everyone!

Polite is สุนัขเฝ้ายาม

Normal is หมาเฝ้าบ้าน

In thai we do not say สุนัขเฝ้าอาคาร

Because อาคาร is building.

Thai, we have dog to look around the area not the building. Mostly the dogs stay out door at night.

I wouldn't be quite so dogmatic about that. The Lexitron dictionary gives two alternative translations for guard dog: สุนัขเฝ้าอาคาร and สุนัขเฝ้าที่พัก.

Clearly the expression does exist, even if it's not commonly used.
