Can I leave the country?

Featured Replies

I am currently working for a Thai government school in Lopburi; I have a work permit.

I urgently need to leave the country due to familial matters and don't have time to give my school the required notice. Can I simply turn up at the airport and fly out without cancelling anything?

One issue that concerns me is that, due to illness, I couldn't travel to the local immigration office last time to update my extension of stay. Instead the school posted in my passport and I got back a slip of paper which says "this is not an extension of stay please notify your address again on 2 Jan".

Based on the information provided, will I be able to leave Thailand without issue via the airport? I really can't afford to shell out for a ticket only to be turned away at immigration.

Thanks a lot for any information.

That was a report of staying longer than 90 days in the country that was done, It has nothing to do with your extension.

You will have no problem leaving the country.

You should at least let the school know that you are leaving.

The school did a 90 day report for you, not ask for an extension.

Look at your passport, immigration stamped it with a stamp saying something like permitted to stay till **-**-201*. If that date is in the future, no problems. If that day is in the past you will have to pay a fine because you are on overstay.

Thank you so much, that clears it up. The date is in the future so all I need to do is turn up at airport? I don't need to cancel my work permit or anything like that?

I have read of people saying the were refused departure and told to go to the immigration office and present a letter from the school stating that the job had been concluded.

They only stop people from leaving at border crossings. Not at the airport.

suggest you obtain a re-entry permit to keep your extension of stay alive if you need.

If you want to come back on the same visa, don't forget to get a re-entry permit!

I just asked the same question on a different website and they say I might need a release letter from my school. Apparently because of the military government things are stricter now?

What an absolute nightmare this is!

Why would immigration even know you had a work permit?

Unless you hand the work permit to them with your passport.

I guess due to the kind of stamp in my passport and the expiration date. Also the 90 day address report slip I have would indicate that I have a work permit.

It just seems impossible to get a definitive answer to this question. Some people say it won't be a problem;others seem to suggest it might be due to a stricter government.

I guess I'll just have to take the risk in the end but it will really hurt if I get turned away at departure.

it's facts, not "some people". Only at some land border immigration may cause problems, not at that the airport.
