Coming to Thailand on Xmas day for a while and was thinking of doing a bike trip somewhere with a friend. The budget is pretty low this time and Laos seems like the easiest and most affordable option so far. I wanted to ask some questions from the more experienced.. We we're thinking of renting a road bike e.g. Kawasaki er6n from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. I know a rental shop in Chiang Mai that gives you damage insurance on big bikes, which is pretty good.

Can you ride a rental motorcycle from Thailand to Laos?

In case not, do they have any good rental shops in Laos, that give you insurance?

Where would you recommend riding in Laos if you have done a trip like this before?

I understand that the bike can cross into Laos only if accompanied by the owner and green-book.

Some companies will supply the necessary paperwork to cross borders but usually charge more. Laos roads mostly unmade or potholed so small trailie best unless two up.

Laos is certainly different and worth a look but if on limited time/budget would stick to Thailand unless you've done it all.
