sriracha john Posted July 31, 2006 Share Posted July 31, 2006 Foreigner caught in fake credit card scam bust Police yesterday arrested a Briton for allegedly making, using and selling fake credit cards. He is suspected of belonging to a crime syndicate involving Thai and Malaysian accomplices. Police said Patrick Lazerian Marher, 37, was arrested after selling a fake credit card to an undercover policeman at his apartment on Sukhumvit Soi 6. A mobile phone, computer notebook, 22 counterfeit credit cards and a magnetic-strip reader were found there. Police said Marher would plead guilty to the charges. He remained in custody. A Standard Chartered (Thailand) official Parnjit Sunalai said he suspected retailers co-operated with the suspect. He cited jewellery and souvenir sellers. He estimated the gang had purchased as much as Bt100 million in goods with fake cards. Parnjit said credit-card fraud was now rampant in Thailand. Cards issued in Malaysia - once a haven for fraudulent plastic - were now equipped with silicon chips and not easily-forged magnetic strips. This undoubtably helps the scammers (if they find a discarded receipt). When will LOS wise up and leap-frog over the problem to join other western countries in helping stamp out credit card fraud? This undoubtably helps the scammers (if they find a discarded receipt). When will LOS wise up and leap-frog over the problem to join other western countries in helping stamp out credit card fraud? Some machines in australia do that too. I went into Koncept funiture at MBK last week to buy a kitchen, and handed them my credit card to pay. The woman started writing down the number and expiration date on the invoice paper... I stopped her and asked <deleted> are you doing. She responded "This is the way we do it with all credit card orders", and proceeded to go and fetch the invoice book to prove it. She started flipping through the book and showing me saying "Look, see all the credit card numbers". She then put the invoice book (the one containing the 100s of credit card numbers, and expiration dates) down on the coffee table where i was sitting, and wandered off to get some more paperwork or something, 15 minutes and came back, then wandered off again for something else. All in all the book was sat on the coffee table unwatched for 25 minutes. Last time I checked, having only numbers did not a new credit card make. In the case of online fraud, does not all merchandise purchased have to be sent to the billing address for the card? When we came back i quickly scratched my credit card number off the invoice and said "I'll go get some cash instead" yes, i would think the number alone with the name, would not be enough to make a fake credit card. to purchase online you would need at least the CCV number and the billing address. (tho her invoice book, might also have had the address too.) i would think the magnetic strip would also have expiration date etc. encoded too. You could definately rack up quite a bill online with someones name/credit card #/ Expire Date There are plenty of online stores that allow you to ship to a different address from the billing address...and plenty of them dont require the CVV. I buy from Amazon and send to other addresss all the time , good way to buy birthday/christmas presents. Last Christmas i had case of wine shipped to my sister from Majestic wines , all online. The direct consequences include the lack of confidence in Credit Cards in Thailand, resulting in difficulties using, obtaining and even having a credit card posted to Thailand. As for Jaidam’s rant against asylum seekers – I take it Jaidam didn’t start his life in Thailand, but is happy to move there. - The 'Little Britain Rant' is best saved for use while actually in Britain (probably best in some BNP infested public house). However easily available card readers coupled to a data storage chip, or even an MP3 player can readily be used by a dishonest vendor to capture the mag stripe detail.
