Influx of boat people a "huge burden for Thailand" - military spokesman

Influx of Chinese going to quickly be a much more heavy long-term burden. Poor refugees getting no help whatsoever is so arrogant and ridiculous. C'mon even some temporary refuge for 'em?! Didn't they listen to the monks preaching about karma every week at their little temple sessions?

What a ridiculous statement by this military ISOC spokesperson.

Thailand has over 2 million foreign workers, most of them from Burma and until recently the majority were undocumented.

Thailand has hundreds of thouands in refugee camps along the Burmese border in Tak and Mae Hong Son and this situation has been unchanged for years and Thailand has done very well in terms of being paid to keep them.

To state the country is buckling over the, often enforced, arrival and detention of boat people is absurd and patently untrue. This is simply a ridiculous cry for sympathy after Thailand was yet again accused of treating illegal aliens abominably.

Thailand is an island in the world when it comes to human rights and giving. Thailand wants no part of bare minimal costs to feed and shelter these destitute abused people. Thailand rather shuttles them off to the slave market run by Thai big men. Everyone knows this. Why doesn't the newspaper continue this investigation and lead police and the army to a few Thai big men busts.

Why doesn't the editorial board the newspaper evangelize refugee programs in Thailand. Education , useful work, contributing to a new way of life and support of Thailand? Thailand just doesn't want to be on the humanitarian side with other global nations. Thailand is a nation of 70 million who have been helped considerably by humanitarian organizations and foreign aid and funding. Thailand just refuses to be on the "giving" end of humanitarian work. What goes around comes around.

Why don't their oil rich Muslim brothers in the middle east/saudi arabia take them in?

Because they don't want them either.

Why should any country be obliged to take in anyone from anywhere?

Problems in your homeland - sort them out yourselves.

Too weak to do it? Your problem. It's a tough world out there.

There are huge , huge refugee camps in Iran , Turkey, lebonan, Jordan pakistan etc. Islamic nations take on more local refugees than you give them credit for.

Do a little research and open your eyes. Your anti Islam stance makes you look like a small minded ignorant racist bigot. Strange for a foreigner with an interest in thailand.

Saudi Arabia had taken in 400k+ Rohingya, but they are now being exposed to deportation and imprisonment as their documentation has been cancelled by the Bangladeshi government. As said above millions of refugees are being given refuge by a number of Islamic majority countries.

Out of curiosity do you have the same attitudes expressed above towards the Syrian / Iraqi Christians?

Farang trying to force their own ideals unto others again.

Look there are like over 100 countries in the world. How many countries do you think engage in humanitarian aid? Not very many. Would you expect african countries to do it? Yup almost all of them are poor but the richer ones like south africa could help out the poorer ones but they don't and they don't get chided for it.

In fact i think the majority of these countries would be farang ones. Possibly the top ones would be USA, canada, australia, UK etc. It's actually ok because these countries are so huge anyway. Lots of living space. Russia probably doesn't do much but would you lecture russia on it?

Let them go to farang countries.

Taken in and then going to be deported. To where then?

It's good. Muslims should take care of one another. The thing is saudi arabia has one of the worst human rights abuses. Workers from muslim countries like bangaldesh, pakistan get tortured and abused there all the time. it's actually surprsing they would take in those refugees maybe they would suffer slavery over there.

The quality of posts here just gets better and better, one xenophobe, a pointless reference to Yingluck, and an attempted link to the Rice Subsidy scheme.

All over the misguided comments of a military "spokesmen" who is totally unaware of the irony of the situation that finds him speaking on behalf of an organisation that cost Thailand $5.7 Billion US this year..........................coffee1.gif

Well like most other countries, they will just have to learn to deal with it, or do something about it

Thailand has already got hundreds of thousands of illegal migrant workers. Does a few extra ones really matter ?

If Thailand really did feel that its got too many of these people, well, how about removing some of the existing illegal migrants ? They won't do that, because Thailand's rich people want all that extra labour to keep wage costs down !

A few years back were a number of reports that thousands were being held in Saudi prisons as they were not any offers from countries to accept those designated for deportation. Haven't located any updates.

BS the UK takes over 200k people a year...

That doesn't make it right and if you ask nearly everyone with a brain they'll tell you they don't want the immigration BS going on too.

There is nothing wrong with immigration and migration its something humans have been doing for hundreds of thousands of years. It is one thing to have fluid and flexible controls and quite another to act as Thailand does towards people. Im not a fan of Australia's policy either, lets face it most nations are fed, treated medically and cared for in all services by the sweat and hard often terribly paid labour of immigrants and migrants. Without it these nations would be in serious trouble.

Claiming a huge burden for a few thousand is frankly pathetic, but we are used to the military with brains and military thinking they are limited by.

OIC someone was too quick to praise the saudi and the muslim countries for helping them then.

Why won't the saudis help? Imprisoning them isn't helping them. Kind of surprising there aren't any offers from any countries.

Saudis: Hey we have some refugees for you to take care of.

Other countries: We'll pass.
