BANGKOK, Nov 24 -- Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha might discuss the schedule and venue of the next round of southern peace negotiations with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak during the former's visit to Malaysia in early December.

Gen Prawit said that the discussion was likely as Malaysia offered to facilitate the peace negotiation. He also said that preparation for the peace talks was nearly completed.

He denied that ongoing violent incidents against innocent people in the far South were related to the upcoming peace negotiation with southern insurgent movements.

Gen Prawit said that they retaliated against the authorities' arrests of southern insurgents and raids in the South.

Actually the situation in the far South were improving and the authorities could maintain order and control the area.

Gen Prawit encouraged insurgents to enter into negotiations with authorities.

Early today a bomb was detonated near Ban Utae Buera-ngae School in Kapho district of Pattani province wounding two paramilitary rangers on patrol. They were on duty to protect local teachers. (MCOT online news)

Improving, really?

There is no point in negotiating. It is clear what the Muslims want before they will even consider peace and they also have the silent backing of Malaysia if the truth be known.

I for one am amazed this terrorism has not been exported to the tourist areas on a wholesale basis. If you really want to hurt the Thai government and cause headaches, then collapsing their tourist industry would be very simple and effective.

Glad I live in a part of Thailand where i have not seen a Muslim in the 5 years I have been here.

I don't believe you. You haven't seen a Thai Muslim in 5 years of living here? Really? They are everywhere... sometimes just fitting in quietly. Tell me there is not a mosque within 30Km of where you live, and I'll say you live in the mountains, but at the bottom of one side of the mountain a mosque is under construction! ;)

What this article and Gen. Prawit neglect to mention is that O'cha is taking along his new head of peace negotiations, General Aksara Kerdpol. It takes an inspired leader to nominate an Army General to lead your peace talks with the Muslim separatists, especially considering the "history" the RTA has with their dealings in the south. Presumably the civilian Thawil who was reinstated in May by order of the Administrative Court despite having a mandatory retirement date of September, was deemed not skilled enough in peace negotiations, unlike the General............................coffee1.gif

In August 2014 Thawil "came across to many observers as a 'lame duck; looking forward to a retirement which is just months away." In September 2014 Thawil went to Malaysia to hold talks with his counterpart and to say goodbye (aka boondogle). In October 2014 Gen. Prayuth appoints Thawil as his personal adviser for Malaysian talks. Thawil seems to be the army's golden boy to want him active beyond his mandatory retirement date but like Yingluck doesn't seem to want him to be too prominent in the insurgent peace talks.

However, while not selected to lead the peace talks General Prayuth appointed "retired" Thawil as his personal adviser in the Malaysian peace talks. Thawil seems like the Army's golden boy but has no place for him to really amount to anything.

A, it's less about religion, buddhists/muslim, and more about smuggling and political corruption, just like everywhere else in the World and in history. Hopefully, they will cut a gang lead deal on who gets what slices of the Corruption Pies.

B, They could hide the gangland deal, by masking it in a [Distinct Society Clause], like Canada did with Quebec.

As long as the siphon to BKK is flowing, there will be upset Regional Nabobs, same old story. [eg: Suhkotai breaking off from Khmer Empire].

all through History, over and over and over, again >>>>

Sukhothai had been a trade center and part of Lavo (present day Lopburi), which was under the domination of the Khmer Empire. The migration of Tai people into the upper Chao Phraya valley was somewhat gradual.

Modern historians stated that the secession of Sukhothai (once known as Sukhodaya)[2] from the Khmer empire began as early as 1180 during the reign of Pho Khun Sri Naw Namthom who was the ruler of Sukhothai and the peripheral city of Si Satchanalai (now a part of Sukhothai Province as Amphoe). Sukhothai had enjoyed a substantial autonomy until it was reconquered around 1180 by the Mon people of Lavo under Khomsabad Khlonlampong.

Two brothers, Pho Khun Bangklanghao and Pho Khun Phameung took Sukhothai from Mon hands in 1239. Khun, before becoming a Thai feudal title, was a Tai title for a ruler of a fortified town and its surrounding villages, together called a mueang; in older usage prefixed by pho (พ่อ) "father",[3] (comparable in sound and meaning to rural English Paw). Bangklanghao ruled Sukhothai as Sri Indraditya – and began the Phra Ruang Dynasty - he expanded his primordial kingdom to the bordering cities. At the end of his reign in 1257, the Sukhothai kingdom covered the entire upper valley of the Chao Phraya River (then known simply as Menam, "Mother of Waters," the generic Thai name for rivers.)

Traditional Thai historians considered the foundation of the Sukhothai kingdom as the beginning of their nation because little was known about the kingdoms prior to Sukhothai. Modern historical studies demonstrate that Thai history began before Sukhothai. Yet the foundation of Sukhothai is still a celebrated event.

Really? What fantasy are you reading? The south is a legend -- they want autonomy but somehow always vote for the democrat party (not just suspicious but a downright lie).

The last thing this government wants is peace. Warfare keeps the voting murky, and everyone in Bangkok is happy. Soldiers are employed and everyone is.......almost happy.

The worlds ostrich population is getting pissed off as all they are seeing is senior Thai Military faces and it's causing politico turmoil in that region of headinsandland.

One senior ostrich who wished to remain "anonymous " said that the current trend of RTA heads appearing on a more frequent basis was a worry as it's getting quite crowded and they may have to relocate.

Another member of the animal kingdom , the giraffe said that it was quite bizzare and dismissed the Claims of the Ostrich as he's noticed that many RTA senior personnel seem to have their heads in the clouds most of the time.

However the big bear and leader of the pack was last seen heading off into the woods.
