how to buy governament bond

Recommended Posts

Good morning everybody,

I will like to buy some Thailand governament bond. How can i do that?

In particular i am looking to buy the TH062302O000 , but online i cannot find any price

Next week i will go to the bank to ask, but i will like to have some info first than go.

Also regarding the tax, as far as i understand they will pay the coupon less 15% and i can after claim it back if is not that much. Is it difficolt to ask for a certificate to claim back the tax? I have to ask the bank, or in case of fix income they will provide it to me directly?

thank you very much

I went to ask directly the bank.

First UOB : they say that they only sell mutual fund, but that i can try their broker Kay HIan

second Krungsri: they say is possible to buy bond, but they not have that one but they tell me that Scb , Krungthai and bangkok bank maybe have

so i go ti bangkok bank, and after wait a bit they take my number and they say they will call me back.

SET, TMBDA, ADB and BOt websites would be useful starting points for general info

1)There's some good general knowledge info on SET's website, but you'll find that BEX (the electronic exchange) covers only corporates, and government bonds are mainly over the counter (OTC) so you will need to go thru a bank/broker:

http://www.set.or.th/en/products/bonds/bonds_p1.html

http://www.set.or.th/en/products/bonds/files/bond_knowledge_eng.pdf

http://www.set.or.th/en/products/trading/bond/bond_trading_p1.html

2)When people say that only Thais are eligible to buy government bonds, they are generally referring to the government savings bonds, which are special issues to small retail investors, rather than the bonds OP mentioned

3)The Thai Bond Market Association (TMBA) has some info on specific bonds. If you highlight the bond info type on the row near the top, them click on issuer information you can search specific bonds by issuer. To be honest don't recognise the ID you have mentioned, as I'm more familiar with the BOT and MOF bond IDs.

http://www.thaibma.or.th/bond_info.html

4) The ADB website is quite useful too. Not just for Thailand but ASEAN + 3

http://asianbondsonline.adb.org/thailand/buying/government.php

http://asianbondsonline.adb.org/thailand/buying/government/how_to.php

http://asianbondsonline.adb.org/thailand/buying/government/after.php

http://asianbondsonline.adb.org/thailand.php

5) BOT's website may also be useful

http://www.thaibma.or.th/yieldcurve/YieldTTM.aspx

For actual trading /buying contact a bank/broker. Not sure how easily you'll get accepted in practice though. Thai bonds are not something I trade myself smile.png tho' am familiar from the institutional side, hence the sites above to build your knowledge. Secondary market procedures:

Cheers

the last time goverment bonds went on sale they were sold in 20minutes,the wife had enquired about them and only bkk.sell them.it will be interesting to see what happens when they put on sale the bonds to raise the 700billion that was lost over the rice scam.

you are referring to bonds which Fletch described

there are some Thai government bonds traded internationally (offshore) but very few denominated in Thai Baht, e.g. this one

http://www.onvista.de/anleihen/snapshot.html?ID_INSTRUMENT=40014055&PERIOD=5&ID_NOTATION=72664968#chart

maturity in 2061 (47 years from now), yield 4.18%
