Slavery levels in UK 'higher than thought'

LONDON: -- There could be 10-13,000 victims of slavery in the UK, far more than previous estimates, analysis for the Home Office suggests.

Modern slavery victims are said to include women forced into prostitution, "imprisoned" domestic staff and workers in fields, factories and fishing boats.

The figure for 2013 is the first time the government has made an official estimate of the scale of the problem.

The Home Office has launched a strategy to help tackle slavery.

It says the victims include people trafficked from more than 100 countries - the most prevalent being Albania, Nigeria, Vietnam and Romania - as well as British-born adults and children.

So where are all the comments about this being due to the culture there or as a consequence of incompetent, lax, corrupt policing or because of official indifference?

You know we'd be wading through pages of similar comments if the report were about Thailand.

+1...I'm surprised that their aren't many pages of comments too.

What culture would that be then? be intresting to see who has these poor people in bondage, can tell you the fact is, it aint my culture (being a 'Diverse' nation on all the govt/local council forms when asked I check the White/British box off)

With the open door policy on migrants into the UK it don't suprise me the amount of slaves trafficked in to supply these poor people from other countries who still believe that slavery is an acceptable practice. There have been a few cases come to light in the last couple of years and funnily enough not one case was attributed to the box checked above... Go figure

The problem is to get headlines you have to make outrageous claims. Personally I don't believe the numbers.

Is someone working being paid based on production who makes less than the minimum wage a slave ?

Children of farmers who do unpaid work on the farm are they slaves? The UN is anxious to call all the

bar girls working in Pattaya/ Phuket trafficked women. Personally I call B---S---. Girls are rescued every day

in the Philippines. They are left scratching there heads, and return to the bars to work as soon as they are able.

Are there slaves and trafficked people in the world? Of course there are. The number in the UK was estimated at below

2,800 last year and the number now is between 10,000- 13,000. It sound like numbers are just made up.
