Phuket beefs up security following threats of violent attacks

Phuket has stepped up security in the wake of reports that the Pattani United Liberation Organization (PULO) had threatened to attack big cities including Bangkok and this southern island resort.

Governor Udomsak Assawarangkun (อุดมศักดิ์ อัศวรางกูร) said security officials are safeguarding the province on land and in the water and the air round the clock.

Intelligence officials are gathering information and fast-moving units are prepared for any untoward incident , Mr. Udomsak said.

He said Muslims in the province are also helping protect their own communities.
