Procedure Mai Sai re-entry

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Just a quick question.

I need to get my ed visa extended, because my 90 days are up, I have a multiple entry and so I (just) need to leave the country and come back.

I'm feeling it is as straightforward as this:

- I go to Mae Sai (going on a trip there around new years), cross the border,

- Get a Birmese transit visa/visa on arrival,

- Bring only passport pictures for that,

- Go back across the border into Thailand, to get a stamp to extend my visa for 90 days.

Please advise me if it is like this, or if there are other things to take into account. Also things like processing times would be very helpful.

Also, I am planning to go on Saturday the 27th, would that work? No holiday closings?

It might be easy and as simple as it seems but because many rules change and I am still new to these visa trips, I would really appreciate your advice.

Thanks!

You will be getting a new 90 day entry not an extension (extensions are applied for at immigration).

How long it takes will depend upon how busy it is at the crossing.

Border crossings are open everyday.

Mae Sai is about as easy as you will ever find. Exit Thailand, walk across the bridge, present your passport (no photo needed) give the Burmese a crispy new $10 usd bill...Burmese will take your pic and stamp you in.....IF you want to wander around a bit on the Burma markets they will give you a card to redeem for your passport when finished...IF you don't care about spending any time on Burma side you tell them no shopping and they will give you your passport back...walk back across bridge and fill out a simple arrival/departure form and re enter Thailand with new stamp in passport.

Normally takes me ten minutes or less for entire transaction. Some will say you need to give Burmese 500 baht but I have never ever had them refuse a $10 usd bill as long as clean newer one.

Might not be a bad idea to have 500 baht at the ready as they have never accepted a $10 bill from me, even a clean newer one. Just one of those vagaries which make life interesting.

Sorry OP, I hope I'm not hijacking the thread, but my question isn't worth a new starting a new thread..

I'm on a marriage extension and I want to visit Burma from Mae Sai.

I need a re-entry permit, right?

How much are they and where do I get one?

I believe the re-entry is 1000 baht and you can get one at immigration in Mae Sai or in Chiang Rai town. If you only want to go over the border for a few hours to shop, you can use something called a VIP day pass. That will cost 100 baht on the Thai side and 500 on the Burma side. Your passport is held on the Thai side so no stamps and your visa is not affected.
