DSL/Cable near soi 22 needed ... typical costs?

Featured Replies

Hello, my serviced apartment is offering me DSL at 2000THB/month or use their dodgy/slow wifi for free(which has never worked well over the years).

Is this the going rate for DSL in BKK ? Is there typically no choice of cable? Maybe i'm going to be stuck tethering 3g to my laptop if 2000THB is the going rate, or maybe I could talk them into allowing me to set up my own?

I need it for a 3 month stay, so don't really want a long contract, thanks

PS sorry if this is a repeat or so ?

I live on Asoke (Sukhumvit Soi 21) and have True DSL. I am paying 899 baht/month for what I think is now a 15 Mbps connection.

If you are only going to be here for 3 months, why not just pay the 2000 baht? That's assuming, of course, that it is a better connection than their free wifi.

thanks that gives me some idea, what is normal, I guess, I just object to paying double the going-rate for Internet

Did you have to sign up for a contract to get that rate? Wonder if I'm just paying the condo the extra 1100 THB /month

Well, it depends on the plan speed but if it's around a 10 to 15Mb speed plan the apartment's price of Bt2,000 month is about three times the going price. I pay Bt599/mo for a True 15Mb DOCSIS/cable plan here in Bangkok.

are these things dependent on whether there is cable access in the unit? maybe, I could talk them into allowing me to sign up, both the condo, and True, on a tourist visa?

or do you have a annual contract to get the lower rates ?

maybe I can try to tether 3g/4g to the laptop , with some high data plan instead , as I am going to want a data plan

Yes, what internet service provider (ISP) and plan you can get will depend on what ISP has rights to your area/building/condo/etc. And an ISP like True which offers xDSL, DOCSIS/cable, or fiber probably won't offer all three to any area/building they have rights to...just not economical to be running xDSL lines, cable lines, and fiber lines to the same area/buidling. Like me in my moobaan in western Bangkok...for the first couple of years living here my only choice of internet service was TOT xDSL and then True came in with cable TV & internet so I switched to True DOCSIS (cable) internet. My choices for internet now are either TOT xDSL or True cable...no other choices. And from many posts I've read when it comes to building/condos it's not uncommon for only one ISP to have rights to the building...they are basically in a contract with the building owner who gets a commission for service provided.

Now, ISPs that provide Wifi service have changed the ballgame since the Wifi service does not require xDSL/cable/fiber lines running to the building/condo...it's basically like internet via 3G. This may give you more choices depending on what Wifi services may be in the area.

When an ISP services your area, initial hooked should be free to low cost (say Bt2,000 worst case)...most likely closer to free or up to Bt1,000. A lot will depend on the promotion in effect at the time...and this usually involves a "one year" contract.

thx pib, so 2000Thb x 3 months, off -contract, is not necessarily, an exorbitant type charge, would you say ?

It's two to three times the normal rate of a 10 to 20Mb plan.
