Residents of flood-hit areas in Narathiwat province hold bags containing relief goods and food provided by His Majesty the King and given to them by the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation yesterday. The South has been suffering from severe flooding following days of rain

BANGKOK: -- Flood-weary residents in the South - from Nakhon Si Thammarat down - should brace for more rain, the Southern Meteorological Centre (for the eastern coast) warned yesterday.

The centre also warned that there would be waves of up to four metres in the Gulf of Thailand until Wednesday.

Seven Songkhla's districts - Hat Yai, Sadao, Khlong Hoy Khong, Chana, Thepha, Saba Yoi and Khuan Niang - have been declared flood-disaster zones, while Na Thawi district was being assessed and could be added to the list, provincial disaster prevention official Amnat Pholmat said.

A Thai-Malaysia border pass in Sungai Kolok district in Narathiwat was closed for the third consecutive day yesterday, while a 46-kilometre stretch along the Sungai Kolok River in Waeng, Sungai Kolok and Tak Bai districts was under two metres of floodwater.

Narathiwat's Muang district was experiencing rising floodwater due to run-off in Rangae district.

The Rajaprajanugroh Foundation yesterday provided 3,000 relief bags to flood victims in four Narathiwat districts - Joh I Rong, Chanae, Rangae and Rusoh.

In Yala's Muang district, days of continuous rain caused the Pattani and Sai Buri rivers to rise, inundating hundreds of homes and low-lying farmland in tambon Yupo with one-metre-deep floodwater, while two roads in Raman district were impassable.

Yala Provincial Administrative Organisation president Muktar Matha and his team yesterday gave 5,000 relief bags to affected residents in Muang and Raman districts.

The Yala Provincial Disaster Co-ordination Centre said 37,871 people in eight districts had suffered flooding between Wednesday and Friday, with two people killed and one injured.

One hospital, 23 schools, 39 roads, and one bridge had been damaged, it said.

The rain has been heavy, but Hatyai IS NOT FLOODED. How can it be a disaster zone?

I live on a dead-end soi that was over a meter deep in the last flood, yet even the swamp at the end of the soi, which is over a meter below street level, is not flooded.

The City knows the areas that are likely to flood first. 2 days ago, the Mayor of Hatyai announced that if those areas flood, we have 30 hours to prepare. Those low areas have not flooded!

To declare a disaster reeks of putting a hand out to the government for free stuff/free money.
