Tourist visa starting date?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Could someone tell me if a tourist visa is valid 60 days starting from the day my visa was issued or the day that I entered Thailand? I need to get my 30 day extension for my tourist visa after 60 days and my visa was issued on October 28 but I entered Thailand October 31. So I need to know weather to go to get the 30 day extension on December 28 or December 31 (of course the immigration is not open on Dec 31 but in principal)?

Thanks!

Your visa is valid to be used, usually 90 days from being issued, or in some cases 180 days for a double entry. When you enter, you will be stamped with a 60 day permission to stay period, that can be extended before it expires, for an additional 30 days. No need to wait for the last day to do the extension.

This and other topics get covered often, so can usually find some answers by using the search function.

Thanks, so doing the 30 day extension on Monday December 29 should be a safe bet. I will be flying out again on January 26 so I can not do the extension much before.

A single entry tourist visa has to be used by the '' use by date/expiry date'' once used the visa is then best forgotten.

The important thing now, is the permission to stay stamp that was put in your passport by immigration at the airport or land crossing, this is the date that you must leave the country, a tourist visa can be extended by local immigration offices (1,900 baht) for a period of 30 days, that new permission to stay stamp, then becomes the new important thing. the extension can be done at any time but normally in the last week or two of the permission to stay stamp.

In your case get the extension ASAP as your permission to stay stamp will be 28th Dec so you only have 24th, 25th and 26th to do it, or leave Thailand on the 28th

edit - miscounted days, permission to stay stamp should be 29th.

The point is, you do not lose any time by extending early, and as Steve187 says, the important date is the permission to stay date.

If I go to get the extension before Dec 26 I would have to pay overstay in January as I will be flying to Penang on Jan 26. I entered Thailand with my current tourist visa on Oct 31 so my 60 days should run out Dec 31. This should mean going to the immigration on Monday Dec 29 is fine, right?

look at the permision to stay stamp, it will be 29th dec, you get 60days on entry which includes the first day, you do not get 2 months

as beechguy said you do not lose any days, the extension starts the day following the day the permission to stay stamp ends, so the 30 day extension will start on the 30th dec regardless of when you apply for the extension. and will end on the 28th Jan your new important thing.

edit - sorry mis-counted days.

Sorry I missed that comment before, so the extension is valid until the same date even weather I go to do it on Dec 26 or Dec 29. Ok good I didn't know that. Anyway Dec 29 is really the only day that suits me so that's why I would like to go on Monday.

Yes the 29th will be fine, i miscounted the days in my first post.

The stamp on my passport says permitted to stay until Dec 29 (sorry just didn't find it before). Is it still ok to go to get the 30 day extension on that day. Or if it doesn't make any difference in the extension period ending date in January I can also go to the immigration on Dec 26. So the 30 day extension would in any case be valid until Jan 29?

Ok thanks a lot for the clarification. It seems clear now. I will do it either on 26th or 29th as both are ok options.

Actually I would also like to know if my parents who entered Thailand on Dec 10 with a 30 days stamp (no visa) could do their extension with me at the same time? They are staying in Thailand from Dec 10 until the end of January. Can they do their 30 day extension already on Dec 26 or Dec 29 with me or do they have to go on their own later?

Thanks again!

Yes, they can apply already on Dec 26.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place
