The Thai way to compensate for a lack of demand pertaining to accommodation on the islands, flagging restaurants etc:

Increase prices to fleece the reduced numbers of tourists & attempt to make up for loss of earnings from reduced tourist numbers. So illogical & short-sighted but this happens everywhere.

Agree with other posts about govt finally bringing in western 'help' to improve tourism industry. The list of Dos & Don'ts I give to visiting friends gets longer by the week - how not to get hustled in Thailand! What a minefield this beloved place has become for a farang trying to obey the law & keep his head down...
