Lottery committee approves law change to allow online lottery sale

BANGKOK: -- The Government Lottery Committee has approved in principle to amend the existing lottery law that will allow the lottery bureau to sell online lottery to solve the problem of overpricing of lottery tickets.

Major General Chalongrat Nakartit, director-general of the Government Lottery Office (GLO) revealed that the Government Lottery Committee has accepted the proposal to amend the Lottery Act that will enable the launch of new products to make earnings.

The new products will include the selling of online lottery, which the office believes would help to solve the problem of overpricing of lottery tickets in the long run.

The committee has also agreed to set up a fund to buy back lotteries that retailers could not sell out in each lottery draw.

Previously, lottery sellers have been complaining that they had to overcharge the face price of lottery ticket to 100 bath because not all lottery tickets could be sold out in each lottery draw.

They said lottery tickets with repeated numbers such as 00 and other unpopular numbers were always left unsold, thus causing them to take the blunt of all the costs of the lotteries that were left.

But with the fund being set up all unsold lottery could be refunded, he said.

The Government has tried in vain to control lottery ticket price at 80 baht by ending the long quota system. But so far, it was unsuccessful and lottery vendors still.sell at over 100 baht.

Just like a lot of things in Thailand the lottery is a shambles,

charging at least a 100 THB when it states the price is 80 THB.

on the ticket, you cannot even choose your own numbers and

the prizes in relation to the cost of the ticket ,just don't make sense,

for the same cost in the West you can win millions and not in Thai

Bhat.

many of the peoples selling lottery tickets are handicapped. This will take employment opportunity form them, and the the capability of hacking and corruption. If there is money to be made it will be hacked.coffee1.gif

will the result still be fixed?

apples and pears mate: In most western countries the chances of winning are about 1 in 50 million, hence the higher prize. value. In Thailand it's it is a 1 in 999999 chance of winning...much better odds so less money. Also I wouldn't mind 60 000 000 Baht (which is a few million even in Dollars btw)

Why do they need to set up a 'fund' to pay back retailers for unsold tickets when all they are looking at is a basic sale or return set up - where does the money vanish to when they initially buy the tickets?

will the result still be fixed?

Yes, as always.

Only stupid Thai people are willing to buy, knowing that the <40% of the sales are given out as prizes.

I have never seen a smart farang buying these over-priced tickets.

So all the farmers , maids, construction workers etc will be a able to buy a lottery ticket online using their credit or debit cards

It's slightly weird that the tickets are bought upfront by big tiger organizations....who has been winning this lottery?

Hm? It's not the common folk by any measure...they win the 10k and lower baht amounts..

This has been a feeding frenzy for a l o n g time.

I was thinking that the handicapped could purchase their tickets online, cutting out the wholesalers and being able to pick only the best numbers for sale, then selling to the clients that do not have access to buy online themselves.

Could be very good for the handicapped sellers.

The most ridiculous thing ever is that the government does not take back unsold tickets.

Only 2 ways to solve that. Either you have to cut sales on a certain date / time and have 48 hours to return the tickets for credit, and then draw the results after the return deadline has expired, or just move to a completely online system, where you buy from a machine and the machine generates the number, and thats final. There are no unsold tickets in the second scenario.

With todays technology, the handicapped sellers could each be issued with a portable ticket machine, and be able to generate tickets on the spot, that are also registered on the system at the same time.

The current system is stuck in the last century, and ripe for corruption. As another poster mentioned, the prize ratio is also far far less than in most countries.

Sure hope I can still pay 100 baht for a 40 baht ticket

Then get fleeced 20% to get my winnings ... if I win

The current system rocks

Who needs honest online tickets when you can support corruption?

i thought gambling was illegal in thailand

Unfortunately in your Mathis you neglected to take account of the fact that several tickets are sold with the same numbers They are not unique. So to win the whole prize either you have to buy them all or hope someone else doesn't buy the same number as you. So multiply by 10 or 20 and you will arrive at far lower odds.
