krey Posted December 29, 2014 Share Posted December 29, 2014 I have had a condition since I was young that makes me wear glasses for double vision it has been getting a little hard for me to handle lately in my late 30's and was planning on seeing an eye specialist. I would consider flying home but was curious on the skill level, experiences with eye specialist others have had hear like at some of the major hospitals here in Thailand I would want this eye specialist to be highly knowledgeable, such as up to date on the latest methods, surgeries and so forth. That does not mean I am looking for the most expensive I am just looking for some of the best, if it happens they are the most expensive well that is ok In ay case any recommendations, stories and so forth on hospitals, certain doctors etc would all help thank you Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mac Rutnin is definitely the best, but I've been seeing a retinal specialist at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, Dr. Attaporn, who is also excellent. I had/have sub-retinal bleeding (a wet form of macular degeneration) that puts damaging pressure on the optic nerve and causes visual distortion as well as partial loss of vision. Had about 6 injections of a cancer drug directly into the eyeball over several months to stop the angiogenesis and to curtail the bleeding. The leakage and deterioration have been on hold for about two years now following the treatment. Since I stay in Pattaya and I knew I would have numerous visits for treatment and follow-up I wanted to avoid having to travel that often to Bangkok if I had chosen to use Rutnin. bheppell Posted December 29, 2014 Share Posted December 29, 2014 they are good , and considerably cheaper than usual western counterparts. the Rutnin Eye hospital in Bangkok is highly rated , but i have read an article by a USA registered eye surgeon that one should beware of opthalmic surgeons who still use injection mode for anasthaetic into ocular area prior to surgery - some Thai surgeons still do this, even at the big modern hospitals in Bangokok. After all it is your eyes Would you trust some one who is not fluent in English to work on your eyes? Oh this isn't Thai bashing for the PC here this about a man's sight. However, access this to begin the information trail :http://www.rutnin.com/eng/about.php. My Doctor there is Nisa Sothornwit, M.D. and I give Her 2 thumbs up. However, there are 3 pages of Doctors to choose from. Call first and see who specializes in your particular problem. Rutnin Eye Hospital and it's staff can be summed up in one word: Amazing! They have all my health records for over 12 years in their computers... which comes up on the doctors screen on his desk! I hear many asking about the "best AND cheapest." There are the rare occasions when that happens, but the best rule is, across the board from trinkets to brain surgery, the cheapest is NOT the best. Further, all personal evaluations of health care places are unique because few people go to many doctors for the same exam or procedure. The essence of comparison is selection from within a group and that does not happen in most cases, so all you can get is..... "My new Honda CR-V is the best car I have ever had" when his previous car was a Corvair.... and has owned two cars for ten yrs. I have all my eye exams done by an M.D., not an optometrist, and my two cataract surgeries by the head of Bumrungrad's eye dept. I have vein occlusion in the right eye and ocular hypertension in both eyes, All under control thanks to the Hospital and my doctor. My wife had laser sugary in both eyes from the same doctor. macapie Posted December 30, 2014 Share Posted December 30, 2014 There is an eye specialist in Pattaya called Pattaya Eye Clinic, that is just off Soi Yumae who has done magic things for at least 4 people I know of, He also works at the Major hospitals in Pattaya but cheaper at his clinic. Your only recourse, if it really bothers you, is tinted contact lenses. Blue and green eyes tend to fade a bit in color as you age (and people also tend to judge/comment on appearance less as you age) so with time this may be less of an issue for you. lopburi3 Posted January 7, 2015 Share Posted January 7, 2015 Not sure what you would want in a "package" - at Vejthani Hospital any visit starts with normal 20 foot chart reading of each eye using normal glasses and pinhole. Then blood pressure test. Then Autorefraction/Autokeratometry computer test. Then air pop computer pressure test. Then you would visit ophthalmologist for history/exam and and further testing they/you feel needed. In my case always have slit lamp exam and every few months CVFT. Also often have eye drop type pressure test to confirm readings. Unless you require medications such hospitals visits are not that expensive. But i've noticed some changes to my vision recently and think it would be a good idea to get a full check up. What you describe sounds pretty good. And Bumrungrad offer a comprehensive sounding package for Bt 9,000. But Rutnin, which is reputed to be the best eye hospital in Thailand, said they don't have anything like that, just pick a doctor and make an appointment. Maybe they will do all the sort of tests you describe, but their web-site is uninformative and when I called them they couldn't add any more detail. lopburi3 Posted January 8, 2015 Share Posted January 8, 2015 Yes they will test by what doctor sees as required - I have used there facilities many times (from about 1978 onward) - it is a very busy facility but very well organized and not overly expensive.
