2 gunmen open fire on Los Angeles police car
TAMI ABDOLLAH, Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two men opened fire on a police car patrolling a tough part of Los Angeles, but the two officers inside were not injured and one was able to shoot back, authorities said Monday. One of the suspects was later arrested and the other is on the loose.

The shooting occurred amid heightened tensions over attacks on police elsewhere in the U.S. after grand juries declined to indict white officers in the killings of unarmed black men.

Police have not yet determined a motive for the Sunday night shooting in South Los Angeles — an area plagued by gang violence — but said there were no indications it was linked to other attacks on police in the country.

"It was a complete unprovoked attack," LAPD Deputy Chief Bob Green said initially. "They were just driving on the street, and somebody struck out and tried to kill two policemen."

However, Green later said police also were looking into whether the officers might have driven into an ongoing incident and were inadvertently fired at.

"Last night the initial assessment, based on the reaction of officers and the adrenaline factor, was they were getting ambushed, but, you know, things change and it takes a lot to investigate this," Green said.

Officers arrested one man shortly after the attack. Christopher Taylor, 18, was booked on suspicion of shooting at an unoccupied vehicle.

An hours-long search followed for the other man, but he remained at large. Police found a handgun and rifle at the scene, and were looking for video evidence and conducting interviews to determine details such as why and how the shooting occurred.

The two officers were responding to an unrelated radio call and driving slowly in a neighborhood when they saw two men on a sidewalk and the flash of a rifle being fired, police said.

The officers stopped their car, and one got out and returned fire as the men fled. Police found one suspect, uninjured, a short time later along with a rifle and another weapon.

Police searched the neighborhood throughout the night for the other suspect, warning nearby residents to stay in their homes. Police stopped the search early Monday after the suspect was not found.

Chief Charlie Beck said at a news conference Monday that he was concerned that people might be targeting officers but added that the neighborhood had been marred by gang violence during the past several months and there had been a significant number of gang shootings.

The shooting comes as protesters in California and across the country have rallied for weeks against police killings of unarmed black men in Missouri and New York.

The killing of two New York City officers in their patrol car has departments on edge across the country.

The New York gunman ambushed the officers then killed himself after posting threats online, including references to the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the chokehold death of Eric Garner in New York City. Both were killed by white officers.

The police culture of protecting their own...even when they cause an unnecessary civilian death...using cover-ups and insider bargaining is causing a backlash...not just in the black community...but some members of the black community have decided to do what the Justice Department is failing to do...punish the police for their brutality towards civilians...

Please you ex-law enforcement officers do not try to justify these crimes...there is amply video evidence of people being stomped and beaten with clubs while down on the ground and handcuffed...women included...should make you proud...hum?

The only problem is that the citizens should be targeting the officers who got away with murder, this would be better incentive for other officers to behave in the public interests. If it happened to my family I would find the cop after things settled down, he would still be alive but would be missing his hands.

Lol, maybe we should unarm the cops and tech them the fine art if using commands like "please, pretty please, and pretty please with a cherry on top" hand your gun over and get down in the ground.

Reminds me of the movie "Demolition Man."

Why are cops in edge? A few days ago a rookie cop in Arizona was shot in the face and died in the hospital when attempting to pat down a suspect.

---------

Bentzen said the conversation between Smith and Stewart never became confrontational as they discussed the argument earlier in the day. When Stewart asked to pat down the suspect for any type of weapons, Smith, standing about 2 feet away, reached for a gun he had in his pocket and began firing at the officer, Bentzen said.

Oh, the new normal is you have to obey orders or get killed? Put that into law please, would make it so much clearer.

Not liking somebody and getting revenge are two different things. Yes as you can see the law has really done well by the cops who killed several innocent people. Great laws. Stop talking out of your butt.

Which officers 'got away with murder' exactly?

You obviously know more than the relevent grand juries. Care to enlighten us on your insider knowledge?

Each cop that didn't get indicted got away with murder. Just because the grand juries didn't indict doesn't mean the cops aren't guilty, it only means they don't have enough evidence(sometimes) to convince the grand jury. The cops started shooting to kill, no leg shots no, tasers, just empty your gun into the guy holding a plastic gun or no gun at all.

Autopsy reveals LAPD shot unarmed black man Ezell Ford in back, side, arm

When even video evidence of another police killing doesn’t lead to indictments anymore, you know we need to upend this miscarriage of justice

"punish the police for their brutality towards civilians" So just get even by shooting any police officer at random. Using this kind of logic the next time a minority shoots and kills a white person, we should just pick any minority member at random and shoot him/her whether or not they had any involvement in the incident.

The over 5000 of them who have killed unarmed civilians over the past decade would be a good place to start.

Sorry man but this comes down to instinct.

Of course we don't run around killing everyone that we don't like but in my humble opinion there are many people in the world who gravitate towards any position that allows them to bully other people.

On the other hand there are some people who have just been bullied way too much.

I don't know if you have ever been bullied before but when the time comes that you can do something then you don't play patty cake with these people. You get in hard and fast and ERADICATE and TERMINATE.

This applies equally to police and the public. It is a people thing.

Of course we should respect the uniform and what it represents but when they put terrorists into the uniform then it becomes exceedingly difficult.

If you are being bullied, then you and you alone should put a stop to it, not other people who have nothing to do with it, then it becomes a gang thing, and a cowards way out, just like the majority of Thai cardboard cut out gangsters,
