Numbers of tourists from Russia falling by the minute

Fear not. In the midst of a global downturn, Thailand will be rescued by Chinese tourist hordes and massive new government debt (aka "economic stimulus"). Happiness and prosperity will abound. Next question?

That's not actually very accurate, to start with the Chinese economic reforms have slowed growth in China, coupled with the dismal state of Europe economies and the impact of Russian sanctions slowing their economy, the loss of tourism revenues is important.

China relies on the wealthy western states to buy what they produce. Therefore its a global issue. Chinese tourists are unlikely to fill the gap. Even with the increase in promotions to lure Asians to Thailand.

There are some fears about another global economic crisis.

Tough, they only have themselves to blame - well Putin and his idiotic invasion of Ukraine

Putin didnt invade Ukraine. What do watch? Fox News the BBC perhaps. The US and EU where behind a coup that overthrew a democraticly elected government (not the first time). And then lie as if Russia was the bad guy. Its the reverse. Crimea is 90% Ethnic Russian and voted to remain part of Russia. I hope Russia stand up to these bullies and that there economy turns round.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs, this short term pain for Russia will be longer term gain: the shift to China for trade, freeing itself from USD ties with a greater focus on RMB denominated activity= backfire on US and Europe. It may take a while but the Russians will be back.

They won't be back as your Euro-masters as they once were, because they don't have anything to sell except oil and gas. They don't make or create anything.

I heard Russia rocket successfully launched EU satellite recently (actually russia doing 39% of space launches in the world). I heard Russia going to build few Nuclear Plants for India soon, also i heard that Russia is the world largest arms exporter...

Agree about the lager louts but it won,t break my heart to see most of the Russians gone. Ask any Thai about their opinions of the Russians and some other types of foreigners and you will get an ear full. Yea they might love your money but not your overall personality and i would have to agree with them. Negative perhaps but it is the truth. Maybe one of the reasons for foreigners getting taken advantage of. Show disrespect towards the Thais and they will find a way to get even. Respect them, respect their customs, respect their laws, respect THEIR country and guess what no problems.

According to what i heard from decent amount Westerners, most/many of them think about Thais as about second class humans. I wonder if it is a kind of "respect" they show to people of the country they visit.

Ask any Thai about their opinions of the Russians

They don't care in most cases. And moreover even concerned since number of tourists is reduced, it will not have big impact to economy overall but some destinations are pretty dependent from tourists from Russia.

Not anytime soon with even Putin conceding oil may well drop down to $40 USD a barrel this coming Summer..but the Russians do have another trump card up their sleeve..Gas!

oil and gas sector accounted for 16% of the Russia's GDP. You better to read less apocalyptic keekwai around internet.

Well where else do I learn that Russia is the worlds largest producer of natural gas and can bring whole countries in Europe to their knees' if and when there is a severe Winter...and of course jack the price of gas up accordingly! They will have to do something given the sharp decline of their currency and other embargoes now kicking in!

Yet Russian tourists stayed away this past summer. The beaches of Crimea were empty. That should change in 2015 since Russians can't afford to go anywhere else on holiday.

Unless Russia will get land access to Crimea in the next round of talks (wait and see how desperate Ukraine will get if IMF and EU will no longer pay their oil & gas bills for them) Russia will move ahead building the bridge across the Sea of Azov (only 4 km) and connect Crimea to the more dependable Russian infrastructure.

China will probably invest as Sevastopol would be a potential seaport on the Western end of the New Silk Road.

My experience of Ruskies? Had a few beers and pool comp with a gaggle of them. They spoke pretty good English and I had a good laugh. I flew with a Russian airline once (and survived). Plane was obviously full of Ruskies. Very polite and friendly passengers, although they applauded the pilot/crew on landing in Moscow which was strange (and a little amusing).

Mind you, they probably all weren't the types to live in Pattaya. Pattaya is a city of vice and crime. It attracts all types of criminals and sex pests. Of all nationalities (not everyone of course, but you get my drift).

Actually over the EU they tend to applaud when landing, too. It is strange if you haven't seen that tradition before. It's kind of nice in a way.

Some people applaud when landing because they are happy to touch down on home turf - others because they are thankful to have survived the flight.

bad news if your a tourism business that depends on these nationalitys

the statements by some TV members is mind boggleing about Russia and putin ...i suggest swithing off CNN then reserch what you think you know

about>

couple of hints

George Sorros, UN , IMF, US military build up in Europe, US citizen to be Ukraines new PM

Too right there! CNN is a wealth of "FACTS" never to be missed! Maybe there is a general downturn in repeat tourists here, that may just be related to The Great Leader we now have and his foresight and vision in promoting his retarded version of "Thainess"

The Chinese tourists, that the Thais continue to treat as if they are dirt that they have stepped in are about the last hope of tourist income left for this country, most people that have visited the land of smiles will be looking for happy faces elsewhere these days.

Cops ripping you off, a Military Junta, murder galore, piss tests, random searches, welcome to paradise!

Russia faces the perfect storm. I'd feel sorry for them if it weren't for the fact that support for Putin is so strong. Reap as ye sew.

Support for Putin is strong because he's a devious politician who knows all the tricks in the book and he's now using the oldest one, the 'us against them' routine. Them being the foreigners and in particular the Westerners, them being the homosexuals, them being the Muslims, them being the people in regions formerly controlled by the USSR and now openly fed up with Big Bully. Etc.

This show pretty clear that you don't know what you're talking about. First of all this thread is great demonstration of you "us against them" routine, global media just can't stop bashing Russia, sometimes there is more news about Russia in EU part of one huge social network then about EU. Muslims are a decent part of Russia's population if you didn't know. Homosexuals "problem" is exaggerated, large amount of states in USA had same laws just few years ago, or even still have it. Support is high for different reasons you barely will understand.

... and your reply is a perfect illustration of the Russian paranoia I was talking about and on which Putin is capitalizing. Thank you for proving my point and Happy New Year, tovaritch.

Few years ago maybe i might agree with you, till i started to read western media. I suggest you to review this thread from the start. Hint: bunch of sofa bulls can't stop with aggressive racist comments, mods even warned few times about it.

But falling numbers of Russians can't affect the overall Thai economy because Gen. Prayuth made a deal to sell seafood, pork, chicken, and vegetables to the Russians that will help Russia break the Western sanctions. Prayuth the Savior of oligarchies everywhere.

Although ..... the Western countries might start to rethink their relationship with Thailand as it realigns itself with China and Russia as to what extent trade with Thailand is really necessary to the West. Shrimp and chicken are hardly strategic commodities necessary for Western survival.

most of them are families

shame really much more pleasant than the tattooed lager louts

and some good eye candy

Exactly! I never saw these Russian families make fools out of themselves, into very ridiculous.. They got a little more interests than thinking with their little willy, trying to get a cheap teenager and a hangover.... Edited by luckynero

Interesting, and logical oppinion, but unfortunately a little bit wrong :-) The author cannot see the real reason in the deep.

Russia has no country flop, they only organize it for themselves. I'm not a Putin fun, but he is a genius if he can make it happen.

In case anybody has a little overview on global economy can see, that he just push down the value of the foreign investments rate in his territory. These companies would be a massive problem for him in the future, for the EaU what they establish from today. But right now, after the funny hysterical reaction of the EU and their journalist and the not experienced but loud media, he got what he wanted, he purchase back huge volume of his economy, from the escaped non Russian (also non government) investors for a law value, and then own in his hand. Also he is laughing on the EU, as they were jumping into the trap of this artificial panic news marketing, so easy. And he made 20 billion USD profit on that action ;-)

The Russian tourist stay home we see, but not because of the Russian economy flop, because of the local situation, against for them.

Has Putin been chatting to Thaksin?

So, we get fewer Germans coming to Thailand, too?

Correct - and not only less Germans. Which country are you from may I ask?

I'm from Texas.

I think you misunderestimated the question.

No he doesn't. He thinks Texas is a country. Hey it's big aint it?

I play golf a lot. Never met a Russian on a golf course.

I go downtown Pattaya sometimes. Never met a Russian in any of the bars I frequent.

Never met any Russians in the Mapbrachan area where I live.

So really the downturn isn't going to be appreciated by yours truly.

Except::: in the airport where whole families would hold up several lines while expecting the immigration officer to fill in their cards

You must belong to the rich family of expats in Pattaya, you've probably never put your foot inside a 7 eleven where the majority of the customers are Russians and Thais.

Them being the foreigners and in particular the Westerners, them being the homosexuals, them being the Muslims, them being the people in regions formerly controlled by the USSR and now openly fed up with Big Bully. Putin does what demagogues do : he uses basic human reactions of fear in order to gather support for himself as the potential savior. Like in any other country (and that includes Western countries), a large majority of people are not educated enough to think out of the box, which is why demagogy always works.

Demagogy is the nemesis of democracy and no one, for the moment has found an antidote, except of course education.

If a clever politician with no morals and an unlimited craving for power reaches the right position, he can and will manipulate the 'masses' because 1/ he knows how to do it and 2/ they can be manipulated, it's not complicated.

That's why the only solution to counter demagogy is education. And that's why, in countries where the self-appointed elite does not want to implement democracy (no matter how much they claim to do so) because they fear that it would rob them of their power and their wealth, 'the masses' are carefully and deliberately kept away from real education. I think many people here will know what I'm talking about.

Taksins dream...promise the world deliver nothing and keep the people dumb.

Kill those who are annoying.

It was Mao's modus operandi also

I'm not exactly well travelled (maybe 15 countries out of a couple of hundred - and mostly a tourist at that), but one thing that nags me is judging people by the flag they were born under.

We don't get to choose our birth place or initial nationality, but we can choose if we're going to be decent people or a complete [expletive]. I've met beautiful people by pure chance from all over the globe, often from countries that are not their own starting point, and never found that much correlation to where they were born (though our upbringing will have influence initially until we learn to make our own way).

Specifically, those that come from countries that are in mainstream media countries seem to be the kindest hearts of all. I don't proclaim to know why that is...just an observation.

And you really show your intelligence level by implying that Afghanistan and Syria have oil.

"According to the International Monetary Fund, oil sales for 2010 were projected to generate $3.2 billion for the Syrian government and account for 25.1% of the state's revenue."

I wish i could be intelligent like you laugh.png

Merely having some limited talent for research on the internet for readily available facts does not translate into intelligence.

Therefore your final sentence is true.

cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif 90% Ehtnic Russian because stalin screwed so many of them.

And most of the world was screwed by Imperialist Britain so no need to hang on to the Falklands, Gibralter then hey. The US covert imperliasm (maybe not so covert with 170 military bases worldwide) will end oneday as all empires have in the past. Russia as with Thailand have recently agreed monetary swaps with China. Russia is no fool. There economy will bounce back. And as for the racsist rants on Russian tourists here in Thailand im a Brit and wouldnt been seen dead with the beer idiots from my own country here. It doesnt mean all Brits are like that though.

NOT THAT THOUGH

BUT A LITTLE BIT MORE THAN
